best way to build rally gearbox ratios cheap

  transit van, ph2 172
my bro runs a williams clio rally car and were looking into building up a box using standard ratios to keep the cost down what boxes are we looking for guys ? he tried a 1600 16v box not that impressed but still better than the standard williams box, the other problem hes had on 3 boxes is the the circlip that hold the drive shaft cup into the box keeps poping out and loosing drive, even tried welding it in with no joy, any other way to cure this ? we were gona make a washer and weld it solid to casing to stop it happening then throw the casing away if it breaks,

The 182 uses a bolted in circlip or something I forget exactly but its better any gearbox specilaist should know how to do it.

The 1.2 box is supposed to be quite good strenght wise not sure about for rallying though.

1.2 box will have the starter at the front though will it ? i will have to look into the 182 box and casings any ideas on ratios mate ?

Not of the top of me head it has been posted before last time i remember it was 16V_jon who posted them.

172 Mk2 phase 2 has the shortest ratios of the cars but do you need a speedo sensor as a normal 172 phase 2 don'rt have a gearbox speedo sensor the Cup does though.

Could you not afford to buy or have built a proper strong rally type box ?

at rough guess were looking at £550 final drive, £850 lsd, bearings seals etc £100
total £1500 thats with standard gearkit and the possiblty of chewing up another expensive box lol, id consider it if i knew the box would last more than one rally at a time, dont fancy spending much more than that on a box mind

  Lionel Richie
slightly more expensive than that!

£2k alone on gears!

all in for a top box with diff you'll be looking at £3.5K
