182 Fault

  clio 182 volvo s40
I am looking for any ideas on a persistant fault with my 182 Sport.

The car will be driving normally and will suddenly loose power. This is accompanied by the electronic fault warning light coming on (square box with the graph in it).The engine keeps running and there is no apparent mechanical problem. If you turn the ignition off then back on, everything is fine. When the problem occurs the engine ticks over normally, and will drive, but will not rev or make full power (I guess this is a limp home mode).I have been back to the Dealer numerous times, and about six months ago they changed the throttle pedal sender unit. Everything was fine untill it reappeared last week. The dealer could not find any fault codes recorded, though bizzarely the radio now also shuts down after twenty minutes, and the clock/ temp display will not come on unless the radio or lights are on.

I can not establish a pattern with the fault - I did three hundred miles yesterday with a number of stops and starts and there was no problem. In the previous week the fault happened nearly every day, usually with less than fifty miles travelled.

The warranty is nearly expired and I would be happy to pay to fix the fault if anyone could suggest the parts that need changing.

Thanks

I had horrendous issues with my 182 about 20K into it's life, which turned out to be dodgy wiring from the ECU. Typical symptoms were lack of starting on the starter motor, lots of dash lights, but I could always bump start the car. So not the end of the earth but a right royal pain in the ass. Although Renault rewired the TDC sensor, and replaced the sensor about 3 times, it still happened - by luck one day when the AA were out looking at it the guy wiggled the wiring loom out of the ECU and the car started! So shortly after I removed the guard on the ECU (metal shield) took it off (clips everywhere on that so don't just yank it off) and cleaned up the connections with isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds. I then put it all back together, and 20K down the line it's never happened again.

I know it's not exactly the same as your issue, but just about everything sensor wise goes into that ECU and it sounds intermittent to me, as mine was. Sometimes it would be fine for weeks and then not start every day. For what is about an hours worth of work under the bonnet, which won't cost you more than a bag of Q-tips and a bottle of iso, it might be worth a try?

The ECU on the 182 sites just to the left of the right hand suspension turret under the bonnet, just behind the air filter housing.

Hope it fixes your issue, mate!
