Hang on.. just re-read the reply... it only clunks when setting off (in first gear) and occasionally 'off throttle' under hard(ish) engine braking - like lifting off in second at about 30mph or so.
So - is the MOT guy being a five penny twammer, then? Has ANYONE had this symptom and diagnosed it as anything other than a dogbone. If not then I'll just go to another garage and get one fixed on my car. The MOT guy was a bit of a tit - I had the usual 'No, there isn't meant to be an actuator...
Hi all,
I've had a single loud clunk emanating from the gearbox area for quite a while now. It only occurs during a brisk start. (start gently and it doesn't knock). I've searched high and low on this forum and everyone seems to diagnose this as a worn dog-bone mount.
So, comfortable that...
Right - I may be totally wrong with this... But I seem to remember reading somewhere that the 172 cup engine was 'cherry picked' for suitability. Can anyone shed some light or tell me I'm way off the mark! ;-)
Re: RenaultSport Clios - great on the right road, rubbish the rest of the time. Discu
I've owned both - neither are refined but the Clio just has that everyday-foot-down-fun about it. DC2 struggled with 'normal' driving, but that LSD was magic! My next car tho - FD2, innit.
I have a 172 cup. The front does ride high. In fact, it looks pretty odd when sat next to a regular 172. Don't know the actual measurement as I'm at work and car is getting new shoes... Any chance the old springs were not original, and sat lower than STD?
Anyway, if it is sat too high, the new...
My girlfriend's car once did all sorts of odd things like that, strange tyre movements and that which you couldn't pin down to anything in particular - fresh rubber cured all.
Yeah, wheels off the floor - I've been assured now by a number of people that it's quite normal. So long as there's no up and down movement (which there wasn't cos I checked) The Garage have only charged me for the tyres anyway so It's no big deal
Right, a mate has just mentioned that there will be a bit play in the strut when the car is jacked up - I think that mechanic should stick to gluing tyres on... Still not sure what the 'rebounding' sound is tho.
Just rocked up to the garage for a fresh set of rubber this morning, later on in the day they give me a call to say the strut tops are on their last legs (front). Now, that's odd as I changed them less than a year ago in order to pass the MOT... So I tell them that, and they advised that I pop...
Yeah, I could glue the bits back on if I still had them... The rest of the steering wheel is not in a great state of repair tho - has anyone put on aftermarket wheels with airbags?
Hmm, good to hear. Body roll on my car isn't really affected - it's still as flat as ever so I probably don't have the same problem. The noise is getting clearer now. When the inside wheel hits a bad bump when cornering, there is a short 'clatter'. A friend of mine said the antiroll bar is worn...
No - In fact, the grip is not really compromised. It's just an unpleasant sensation feeling / hearing the springs twanging about.
Any news on the new struts, Pitbull?
And, axle tramp. I've heard of that before, thanks.
Might have a quick look at the front springs tomorrow... I know a tiny piece of the rear spring has snapped off, but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems at the moment - this issue is definitely with the front suspension anyway.
I also get a horrible repeating knocking noise when the...
Recently my suspension seems to have gotten a bit 'crashy' (172 cup). That's the only way I can describe it really... It's like the suspension just runs out of ideas when cornering quite briskly. It's only occasional - and I find it difficult to 're-create' when trying to demonstrate it to a...
...how do I slide get the pads out of the carrier? Car is jacked up on the drive with new disks on, but I can't get the pads out of the carrier. They seem to be locked in place by a v shaped notch in the pad. Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers. I'll certianly swap the tyres around to see if that makes a difference. I do get a vibration at higher speeds, so I suppose it could be that... How does a wheel get buckled? I can't recal hitting anything recently. This "judder" only started about a month or so ago.
Driving on a smooth road, slowly, my steering wheel will rock side to side... When i turn, the rocking stops, however the wheel will return to the centre position with very irregular movements. Both tyre pressures are equal, and nothing else strange seems to happen. Any ideas...?
My cup has just started doing such a thing, was browsing the archive to find a similar problem and found yours.
Any luck so far? - warrenty runs out in Oct and would like to go to the garage with a definite problem rather than leave it to the useless fools to find it!
