I never managed to get Hotmail working with Mail. So opened a Gmail account. If I ever need to get on my Hotmail, I just use a web browser.

Its where you highlights are over exposed. Know as a clipping warning. You should be able to turn it off by bringing up the histogram and clicking something in that dialog box, not exactly sure what though.
