Had the same on my 182, thought it was the pre cat lambda so changed that (it wasn't). Turned out it was a faulty injector, so replaced all four for peace of mind.
True, it is quite a high Alkali based cleaner. But then to be effective on wheels it either needs to be high in acidity or alkalinity. If not, you may as well stick to PH neutral shampoo/snowfoam and a brush.
Used correctly and with a bit of common sense, I dont think it will do the wheels much...
I've used DDJ BTBM, ands its ok. Doesnt really produce enough suds for my liking though.
If you havent got a rotary or DA, you could try Poorboys Black Hole, which gives quite a nice finish. Then maybe AG HD wax on top of that, then topping up with Sonax BSD every now and then.
I've recently been trying out some stuff called Viro-sol. About £7 for 5 litres, that you dilute 10:1, so will probably last a lifetime. It's pretty good stuff, it's cirtus based, so wont harm the alloy surface, and shifts muck and grime nicely. Still do a quick spray of Iron X though afterwards...
Seriously mate, get a wheel refurb company to do them. I've spent hours and hours of my life, filling, sanding, filling sanding.... and still not been really pleased with the results.
