I had a very similar noise on my T plate 1.6 16v clio. Sounded very much like there was a very dry tappet or there was no oil in the engine!!

As Headshot says there is a small blue wire that needs liking up to give the power to the adaptor. Also can the ISO connectors be connected any other way? I had a 99 clio and a sony head unit with connects 2 adaptor and was a pain to get wired up properly, even the ISO blocks were different...
Most headunit will do it now if you buy the correct adaptor, if you get an alpine one make sure you buy the alpine branded adaptor if you want the clio display to show the track names etc as im sure the cheaper ones only display the word "alpine" with no other information.

Are you sure it was deffo turned off when you left it? I had similar prob where the ignition swith cable and live cable (think red and yellow ones) just needed either swapping or joining together as they link up witht the head unit, not sure which combination it is now but might be worth trying...
