Very lucky escape, huge lesson learned.

Ok so basically ive had a very sobering 36 hours the end result of which has left me feeling very very lucky indeed. On Wednesday evening we bought a 53 plate Dci 65. We had been to see it before to test drive it and of the 3 we had viewed this was the best. During the sale we were shown a HPI stating the car was clear of finance, total loss and theft etc which gave us piece of mind and only further reassured us that the car was good. Money exchanged hands and we went off happy.

Last night we started to look at the paper work and cracks began to show which led us to HPI the car ourselves. It came back saying the car was a cat c with no vci. It was at this point i phoned Daniel. who laughed and hung up!! No he gave me solid advice in a time where i was in serious need of level headed thinking (cant thank the guy enough but i think he now charges for this service) I phoned up the guy i bought the car off explained what i had found and he said bring it back tomorrow and we'll sort something out.

I met the guy at 3pm it was all calm and civilised i apologised for wasting his time and we left him the car and we left with our money.

After reading other horror stories im very pleased with the outcome, im not interested in naming or shaming as i believe the guy was just trying to make money and in the end he let me off big time.

What was the lesson here? I dont think you did anything wrong on your part at all, in fact the garage should be reported for trying to sell a car under false pretences! You really should name and shame because what they did was way beyond this side of the law and wrong!

I finished work at 530 and while wating for a lift I've done some digging and the guy (who works about 10-12 miles from my place) is a bit of a hooligan to put it politely.
He's got his money back and for him that was the most important thing.

Yes he could have gone to trading standards/police/President obama, named and shamed, kicked off, given the guy a piece of his mind, but that is all a long drawn out and painful process. That in turn would have pissed the guy off and then all sorts of things can happen. Remember the thread of the torched Evo where a customer pissed off a trader??

All Nick has lost is a bit of petrol money and an afternoon off work, but he now has his money back and can go and find another car. Best result all round imo.

Sometimes theres no point kicking off straight away, try the easy way first.

My old man is a car salesman, so he's always told me weather its a £100 car or £10k car, a £5 HPI can show up simple things. Although they don't always show everything, its worth it.

When I was looking at 1*2's the first thing i'd do after phoning them was HPI the car, there was sooooo many that was a Cat C and it wasn't mentioned in the advert, and most of them weren't even cheap!

Iirc, the HPI certificate was on the 10th of the month, Nick's HPI showed it was declared a Cat C on the 11th.

The crafty chap had obviously HPI'd it on purpose before it got written off officially.

I would say its morbidly obese of you to suggest he wouldnt take the necessary steps to rectify the issues surrounding the legality of the motor vehicle in question before releasing it for sale to the general public.

I bought a jeep off of a main dealer, was 2 year old and looked mint, 3000 miles later new tyres were needed. My dad thought it was young lad driving like an idiot. So put 2 new ones on and told me to calm down, yet again less than 3k bald tyres. Took it for allignment and car was bent! Wrote to former keeper who stated he had wrote it off..... But was not insured so garage recovered it and sold him a new one...... Repaired it badly and sold it on with no hpi knowledge, lenghy legal battle and big £ later i was left with no car and costs as they didn't have to tell me as car was bought cash! Sold as seen apparently needless to say I learnt a big lesson! Trust nobody!!

Excellent that you got your money back, some people are not as lucky with something like this.

One thing - As this is a clio forum I think it would be right to at least post the number plate and a few details on the car so noone else ends up buying it off here without knowing? We are assuming the trader is going to rectify it but if he's been that dodgy so far then chances are he'll just try again until someone buys it who doesn't check like you have.

Im glad it all worked out in the end for you but i do think you should at the very least point out the car in question, you have no ties with the seller now and all you are doing is leaving him free to mug someone else off.

It would be a shame to see a thread next week about someone getting stung or worse.

Do i play the hero and try save this guy risking both our lives or do i thank my lucky stars im still alive and accept that the guy with the gun is going to kill someone if he feels like doing so.

Im sorry guys im not prepaired to risk my safety or the safety of the ones i love because you think its morally the correct thing to do.

Also if you read this thread and then go buy a car without HPI'ing it then you deserve to find yourself in exactly the same situation i was in.
