Trophy or Not to Trophy that is the question

Hi All
Posting here for the 1st time and looking for some advise, im looking at buying either a 182 with cup packs or a Trophy, now im not totally clued up in the world of Renault coming from a Vauxhall / Subaru background.

The car will be mainly used by the other half so im guessing all the nice toys like climate, xeons etc would point me towards a 182 with the cup packs but for some reason the Trophy is really appealing :) even thought i wont be driving the car as much as the other half :)

Any comments suggestions would be great

Sounds to me like the decision isnt up to you lol.
If she doesnt like red clios then goodbye trophy idea.
Trophy is more than likely going to cost more to buy so depends how much u want to spend. U still get A/C with trophy so its really only the headlights which u could fit a xenon kit to the trophy.

The trophy is a better car in some ways but the 182 cup packs is better in others.

Trophy all the way. Climate on the 182 is useless. The xenons are average, uprated bulbs in a trophy are brighter. You still get ac, recaros, cruise etc. Will hold it's value better and great to drive.

she loves the Red and yes i guess its more down to her :) but its coming out of my pocket :) i have seen 1 for 8k with only 15k on the clock might go have a sniff around :)

My GF has a trophy and its a great car to drive.
Sounds like uve made ur decision :)

Trophy without a doubt, different car to drive compared to the 182 cup IMO and it will hold its value better

Hmm, id have said 182. If its mostly for the missus to drive id asusme the small differences in handling would go unnoticed by her.

She'll miss out on leather, climate, xenons etc, and spend a lot more money getting it.

Id go 182 unless you plan on doing some serious b-road blasting.

Trophy is awesome but the sachs dampers need re-builds approx every 20k. The colour is also a non metallic that has a tendancy to fade this is a nearly 5 year old car. Not sure but think trophy only has two seatbelts in back. Look to pay between 6-7k.

182s will probably come in a lot cheaper between 4500 - 6000 but it will depend on mileage. Look out for knocking on full lock as the cv bolt can go but it is cheap to replace. Exhaust become swiss cheese if it hasnt been replaced and the rubber on the hangers can slack.

Electrics wise both cars are robust and the interior hardly wears, apart from the steering wheel. 182 in full fat form comes with cruise, xenons, climate and electric everthing. Trophy has ac and cruise.

Good cars that are cheap to insure and mpg is always 30 plus.

PS if your looking for 182 in excellent condition check my arctic 182 for sale in the classifieds looking for 5k.

Free bump!

excellent thanks for the tips guys :) just need to go find another 1 now seeing as the Trophy i was going to look at is now sold :(

Depends how tight her fillings are, yes the Trophy is a great drive and no mistake but it's harsh - very harsh, to be fair you notice it far less when driving than as a passenger (the missus hates it - bummer) but once she drove it she loved it.

It's also interesting to note that at 4 years old and only 27,000 miles mine recently cost me the best part of a grand to get it through an mot, courtesy of an almost collapsed ball joint, 2 new driveshafts (the cv boots were fucked) and a centre exhaust, so they have the usual French build quality (thats s**t incase you weren't aware).

Don't care though, still love the car but if I'm honest knowing what I know now with the benefit of hindsight I'd have bought a FF182 - or a Honda.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Check your info mate. Thats just hear say. Mines on 31k and the dampers are fine. Yes they are prone to wear on normal roads but thats the compramise that comes with the suspension

Mine's on 36k and doesn't appear to be too shabby. Worth getting them dynoed I suspect but I'll be getting them rebuilt anyway so it's a nonstarter.

  182
if its mainly for the mrs i'd say a 182, more things for her to play with and probably more comfy.

The sachs dampers, are similar to say a shock on a supersports motorbike like a cbr600rr. Even though the shock is a showa, it is not really the amount of mileage that the shock has covered but more to do with age. Its not a bad thing, but they are designed
to be rebuilt.

Never understood people that think the trophyis harsh. I never found it overtly stiff. If you read the original autocar review they actually complement it in comparison to the 182cup. Was certainly better than my sportlined 182.

just too clear up the damper debate for the Trophy, mine's 4 years old and done 26k, i had the dampers refurb'd as part of the upgrades i'm doing. On speaking to Ben at BG Motorsport (the guy's who rebuild them) mine were fine as they were and didn't need a rebuild. I had them done anyway, one less thing to get sorted next year.

Last year I ran a Trophy & my wife ran a Black 182 with Cup Packs.

We then sold the 182 as I wanted to keep the Trophy as lower mile & better condition.

I got loads of grief as the suspension IS harder and there is loads of little things that are much nicer on normal 182. Carpets, Headlining, Sunflaps, Door cards, Tint on Windscreen, Courtesy/Maplight, Rear passenger handles, Back seats...... The boot opens wider (oops banged my head again).

I would clearly trade all that for fancy dampers, Recaros and seeing your car in Evo Magazine every 6 months.

Its only when you have them back to back you notice these things.

If you are going down the Trophy route dont let the wife in many 182's.

I doubt many people on here (if we are honest) couldn't tell the difference between a trophy and a 182 to drive.

Your missus will have no idea and will probably not like the colour.

Get the 182.

A blind mute could tell the difference between a trophy and a 182 within 1 mile!

fortunately the misses likes the colour of the Trophy :) which is a bonus now i just have to find 1 that is suitable looking for a low mileage .. i had 1 that i was going to look at but i have been told by the garage its sold pending a deposit but he has my number just in case.

Hmmmm good luck mate, but I do agree on getting a 182 instead of a trophy seems like you're paying a premium for a drivers car you will not use to it's capabilities.

182 in liquid yellow or RB and she'll like both those colours imo.

If you are going to buy a Trophy ensure the suspension has been refurbed or if not make sure you do it yourself. This will cost you between £400 and £500.

According to EVO it's the 7th best drivers' car so it can't be that bad. Having also owned the 182 with Cup packs I can definitely say the Trophy is better to drive fast but the 182 with Cup packs is more compliant on bumpy roads.

It terms of presence and stance the Trophy tops the 182 with Cup packs, but as others have said; if the other half won't tolerate Capiscum Red you're buggered.

got to say,
I had a 172 cup before my trophy and a VTS and a GTI inbetween,
the trophy feels so much more composed, effortless through corners and over a bumpy surface.
really is a joy to drive.

It rolls less than the Cup, has less suspension travel at the front, and yet it rides fully 30 per cent better than that car. To drive it fast over virtually disintegrating asphalt and feel just how well controlled each wheel is for bump and rebound is eye-opening.

30 percent better? Nothing in engineering or science is described as 'better'. Its purely subjective word and therefore unquantifiable. When you read things like this you should dismiss it as marketing folly.

In terms of actual value for money, i'd say 182 with cups. In terms of what is the better car, probably the Trophy, but it needs to be a good condition one to make it worth the premium, too many rotters knocking about at the moment.
