Williams Thermostat

How much for a new one and how long (ie how much) for a garage to fit it? Anything that should be considered when changing it. Im getting coolant flush at same time. Where is the best place to get one? Renault genuine ones ok?

Get a BB Low Temp one out of preference - think theyre about 15quid or something. Since youre getting a system flush at the same time itll only take about an extra 20mins or so. TBH youd be better doing it yourself as its basically a "money for nothing" job.......

Why a low temp one? What advatages does it hold? Surely it just detects at a lower temp and allows coolant into rad at lower temp? Will that allow engine to run cooler? Doesnt make sense to me. Surely once oil is up to temp its irrelevant if thermostat is low temp or not?

In a way yes but since its flowing the coolant to the radiator at a lower temp, the exiting hot coolant will then be replaced by colder coolant thereby reducing the overall temp.

Replacing the thermostat yourself is a really easy job, doesnt require any specialist equipment or knowledge. I got a genuine Renault one when I changed mine and its fine.

I dont know why youd really want a low temp thermostat unless you regularly thrash your car for prolonged periods of time or if its heavily tuned and gets hotter. For normal everyday driving all I can see it doing is causing the cooling system (and hence engine) to take longer to warm up which is far more damaging than the effects of mild overheating. If you never have overheating problems, then I wouldnt bother.

Std or low temp one is fine, both do the same job, and it has nothing to do with oil temps.

pre-mixed Ren coolant is what you should be using.

And do it yourself, its only a few bolts.

Its anti corrosion properties are designed with your williams in mind, its willy coolant........lower molecular weight........erm.......it has a lower surface tension.

i fitted one and its no different. easy to do urself.

when my thermo was shagged, the oil never went above 80, and the temp never above minimum.

now tempo is about half way and oil over 100 on normal runs

Stromba if its anything like mine, then it overheats alot in traffic....

Specially over the Summer mine was getting hot all the time....Im still deciding whether to get the low temp thermostat...or to just go for the swtich that they do http://bbperformancetuning.co.uk/products/product.asp?deptid=97&id=233http://bbperformancetuning.co.uk/products/product.asp?deptid=97&id=233

It depends what you mean by overheating? It is normal for the water temp gauge to get to about 3/4 scale in traffic, and then for the fan to kick in - I wouldnt class this as overheating. Your fan will just kick in sooner, which is fine but brings no real benefit.

Like BenR said it will barely affect the oil temperature (which is the critical one), so its money down the drain in my eyes. At least at that price its not THAT much money down the drain!
"Used to engage the main cooling fan earlier to remain at a lower optimum operating temperature whilst in traffic" - LOL - I would love BB to explain that one to me!

water wetter isnt a corrosion inhibitor, it relieves the surface tension of the water increasing its heat transfer coefficient.

Its not willy coolant either, its just pre mixed renault coolant which is top stuff, the regular blue mix stuffis fine but gets murky really quick with the iron blocks.

You dont have to use it if you dont want to, in the short term its not life or death. But isnt your willy 100% gen Ren?

Why should the thermo affect the fan kick in temp?

So what ur saying is because ren coolant is red you cant SEE when it gets murky so its like burrying your head in the sand. Better to have blue and change it when it does get murkey?

Sorry for the confusion BenR, the link Illusion posted leads to a low temp fan switch!

Mine goes higher than 3/4, sometimes it feels like the fan doesnt kick in so I think the thermostat is up the bucket.

Gonna get the switch fitted for back-up reasons really.

No, at no point did i mention any correlation between colour and ignorance. And the coolant doesnt have to be red.

Like Ben says, go to Renault and buy the premix coolant. Will either be Type C or D, cant remember off the top of my head. There is no such thing as Williams coolant! (pmsl!!!), your car isnt that special!. Its just a bog standard 2L engine!

You also dont need a low temp stat, unless you think your car is running too hot, which probably means there is another problem somewhere if it is.

Engines operate more efficiently when they are hotter (but not too hot). Best to keep a stock thermostat unless you are holding the engine at high rpm for long periods (which I doubt very much).

renault premixed coolant is green. ask fot type d although i think thats all thats avaliable now anyway. A low temp theremostat would probably help to keep the engine cooler for a while but once its up to full temp then the theremostat is open(standard thermostat would be open as well at this temp) so i cant see what you would gain. A lower temp fan switch would be more beneficial espicially when stood in traffic.

I agree with Barry

keep the standard stats and switches in...

as long as the rad and pipes etc are all clean and the coolant has been regulary changes and flushed there is no reason to use lower temp items.. on a road car at least.... (IMO) I use standard stats in my cars! athough my 5 GTT does have an additional oil cooler (but thats cus she is not very standard!!!)

the rad should have a "cooling reserve" for want of a better expression so when driving hard it can still keep it all in check...

many people forget to bleed the coolant on a clio as well...!

the only reason for additional cooling is for high revving cars when the temp does go up and extra oil coolers and larger rads are needed to keep it all in check...

like barry says if the temps are getting out of control there is usually a problem.... the clio rads are now getting a little old so worth getting it all flushed and if in doubt change the rad... especially if there was lots of sludge in the cooling system....

any questions guys, drop me a line....
