They're the same, except one is based around KDE, which, IMO, is very functional but looks crap.. so it fails

Might do tonight. 7.04 didnt like my computer but 6.10 does. I'm getting random crashes now with 6.10 after a software patch. Totally locks up the machine. Deffo a ATI graphics problem. I think the actual laptop is on its way out and it may not be software. I'm hoping 7.10 will fix this.

I prefer Ubuntu with the gnome desktop for several reasons:

1. Its much quicker on my pc than KDE
2. KDE is to much like Windowzzzz
3. I used to use KDE back in the day on Redhat when gnome was s**t, now its the other way round.
4. Its f**king quick! (oh I said that one).
5. Beryl is well cool!
5. Its f**king quick!
6. It pisses all over windows IMO.

On a different note. Windows is s**t.

On another different note. You have to pay for MacOS which makes it nearly as bad as M$ Windowz. I do like MacOS but when I get a Mac I'll stick a copy of Ubuntu on it.

On 7.04 at the moment and am a little reluctant to uprgrade, especially after the faffing i had to do via the ubuntu support forums to get the wireless working and even then I'm still only at 11mbps, max !

The chip i have is a broadcom bcm43xx.

Why don't you try with the Live CD before you upgrade?

In my little week long forced holiday away from cliosport I downloaded and configured 7.10 gusty gibbon.

What can I say:

Good points:
*Updated ATI graphics drivers - all visual effects work out the box (much smoother than 6.10 with Beryl)
*Wireless worked out the box (didnt on 7.04)
*Quicker boot time
*Stable
*Updated utils. New Openoffice/Gimp etc

Bad:
*No boot screen. Simple fix got off ubuntuforums - this fix speeded up the boot time massively.
*Slow internet. Again fixed after looking up the fix on the forums. Now just as fast as 6.10, much, much, much qucker surfing compared to Windows.

I'm well impressed. Was gutted when my 6.10 install started to hard crash after a software update, but now I'm back to normal.

My latest system to get the Ubuntu treatment had a wireless linksys in it.. Just booted it up and there it was telling me about the wireless networks in my area quality !

The drivers that come with the cards aren't designed for Linux.

Exactly.. but to be honest i'm seeing more and more manufacturers 'unofficially' support their hardware in linux. Like Hauupauge etc.

Of course Nvidia etc already officially support thier hardware in linux.. even if there is an open source alternative. Its only a matter of time before a tux starts appearing next to the windows and osx logo's on hardware boxes.

I jest....

To be honest, even officially supported drivers can be very hit and miss. A couple of years ago a project I was working on used a PCI RS485 card and I found all sorts of problems with the official linux drivers, to the point where the product was completely unusable - which is odd considering how much easier/cleaner linux device drivers are to write than WDM drivers under windows.

I like writing device drivers under linux, they're logical and simple. I'm suprised (or not) that microsoft didn't ditch WDM in vista considering how much of a pigs ear they've made of it, they could have learn't a lot from linux in this department. Their effort for vista was a wrapper layer called WDF which supposedly hides a lot of the nasty stuff away, but it's still WDM and it's still crap.

Actually, the coolest device driver I ever wrote was for the Nios processor (ucLinux because of a lack of a MMU), this is soft-core IP that runs on an FPGA, so you basically sit there in the "builder software" and select what features and peripherals you want your processor to have, few button clicks later (and a few minutes) it generates the logic for the processor and peripherals and you can "run" it on the FPGA.

This is where it gets really cool because you can design your own peripherals and attach them to the processor too When we got invited down to altera for a hands on day when Nios first launched we were blown away, it's very cool technology.

I rescued a windows machine last night with 7.10.

Mate funned up his pc by surfing smut.

Put in the Ubuntu live CD, boot into it no problems, attached my external hard disk which it found straight away, dragged all of his documents onto it.

The windows partition is availble on 7.10 out of the box! No configuring at all.

Had to put XP back on for him, then all put all of his files back, but he was that impressed he wants a dual boot now. So hopefully another convert.

He asked me whats the best antivirus to get to stop it happening again. I told him just to stop surfing porno on his windows partition and use ubuntu! lol.
