trying to build a pc

  Writen off dci 100
merry christmas all,

as iv had my old pc about 5 years i think its about time for an upgrade so iv been looking at a few bits to put together a whole new one. i will be mainly using the pc for gaming but i dont want to spend ott amounts.

i kind know the basics as in what bits i need i just dont know how to tell if the components im looking at will be compatible with each other.

anyway heres a list of the components iv been looking at

motherboard - XFX nForce 790i http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142919
processor - Intel Nehalem i7 920 S1366 2.66GHz http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.asp...&NavigationKey=11147&InMerch=1#specifications
ram - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152747
graphics - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143193

any info regarding the above or any other recomendations would be appreciated, also could you let me know if there is anything else i need

thank you for your time

Josie

I may be wrong, but I don't think that motherboard is compatible with the processor you have picked out. If the PC is for gaming, why have you picked such a cheap graphics card and such expensive motherboard and processor? You also need to decide on a power supply, case, sound card, heatsink and fan for processor, DVD drive etc

That processor won't fit in that motherboard. Wrong socket. Plus no point in an nForce chipset mobo unless you're going to SLI.

No point having 6gb of ram unless your going to run 64 bit for a start. I'd debate the cost/benefit on a i7 chip+board as it stands as well.

Also I always stick to asus boards these days as 9/10 they give the least issues.

That's always the issue, but if you can afford it, the Core i7 stuff is pretty impressive... offer great performance.

Whether a decent Core2Quad would be suitable for what you wanna do... well, probably.. especially as the graphics card isn't anything super special, so it doesn't look like you're doing any heavy gaming etc,

Expensive though he said he wanted cheap

They were going to spend £240 on a processor that doesn't fit the motherboard they were going to buy! lol But I do agree the system I put there isn't cheap but it gives them some idea of what they need.

Im going with AMD for my new build. Want quad core, Intel seems very much more exspensive although ive read intel is actually faster than the AMD processors (depending on which one is brought)

My budget is 250 for CPU, MOBO and RAM.

Either a low end Core Duo for that or as you say AMD.

I went to AMD when they brought out the Athlon64.. was one of the first (Athlon64 3000+).. I was happy with it. The new Intel CPUs have really raised the bar though, so I don't really track AMD progress anymore.

TBH the initial shopping list failed so hard, the OP definitely needs to research outside these forums. Not being funny, just trying to help :)

My advice

This
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-094-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1235&name=Powercolor%20ATI%20Radeon%20HD%204870%20X2%202048MB%20GDDR5%20TV-Out/Dual%20DVI/HDMI%20(PCI-Express)%20-%20Retail

And this
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...4GB PC2-6400C5 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle

Will run pretty much anything you could throw at it. And it is roughly the same as you were thinking of spending in the first place. Not the highest end parts but will perform better for gaming than the one you spec'd earlier. CPU and Ram aren't as important as GPU.

Maybe - but it won't cause any issue with a decent, single ATi card either.

D.

Agreed, but the nForce chipsets are not that highly rated. I have a 780i but I needed it at the time for SLI. I guess they're fine if you're not OCing though TBH :)

Mine has a gay FSB hole in it for example. It wont run at 1600, but 1680 is fine.

My Asus 680 board is like that. unfortunately its not just 1 hole...its many. Will be going back to purchasing DFI boards next time I think.

^^Only the one hole in mine that I've noticed. Also Asus. I run it at 420x9. 400x10 is obviously where I hit the 1600 hole. Saying that, I also need to improve CPU cooling before I run at 4Ghz anyway, but it was defo the FSB causing problems at 1600. Intel chipsets FTW IMO.

go for a bundle deal off overclockers, some good prices to be had, thats what i did with mine

think i had my 2gb ram, p5b asus mobo and c2duo processor for £250

i wouldnt go crazy on anything as in 6 months/1 year, there will be 1-2 better items on the market

imo id go with a quad core pentium, 4gb ram and an 9800gt 512mb

that will kill pretty much any game you throw at it and will do for a while PLUS it wont cost a lot either

cool bundle here 2gb quad core and mobo for £288

9800 gtx 512mb £160

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-177-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1009&name=Asus%20GeForce%209800%20GTX+%20%22Dark%20Knight%22%20512MB%20GDDR3%20HDTV/DVI%20(PCI-Express)%20-%20Retail

then throw in a decent branded power supply

I was going to suggest the overclockers bundles- they will make sure you are good to go too.

depends mostly upon your budget then I guess.

actually i said not over the top

now can you see why i put this post down because if i didn't i would have ended up with a bunch of expensive bits that dont do anything lol

cheers for the help people my budget is about 500 - 600 this month and probably an extra 200 at the end of the month so 700-800 and i only need a tower i have the rest

sorry it seems i know even less than i thought

whats the difference between i7 and asus

i7 is intels new platform. 775 is the old platform.

Go with 775 so Core2 processors basically. i7 is too immature at the moment and expensive.
