Trip computer dim?

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice, I've got a MK3 1.2 TCE and this past 2 weeks the trip computer has been dimming for frequent periods of time it is so dim that i can't even read the display. It went dim then came on as normal for about a week then has gone dim again for 2 weeks now. I have tried holding the buttons at the end of the stalk but have had no luck... any suggestions?

Probably the LEDs which back-light it. If you're handy with a soldering iron or know someone who is, you should be able to swap 'em.
