Starter motor on the way out...genuine or cheap and cheerful

Parked the car up last night and out the blue it would not start. I think it did not like the fact I was buying KFC. Starter motor turned but the engine did not fire. To get the car going I plonked it in gear, turned the ignition. The car jolted forward and it started as normal.
Same technique got me to work this morning but this is going to be a short-term solution. Should I be buying a renault starter or a random branded one from another parts supplier?

I may be completely wrong, but if the starter motor is good enough to turn over the engine whilst in gear and start, then it's not the motor that is the problem?
