Should I do the cambelt before I sell?

So in a little bit of a situation, I was planning on keeping my 182 for at least the next year or so but the opportunity has come up, unexpectedly (as these things always seem to), to purchase another car I've been watching for over two years! Not wanting to miss the opportunity, the 182 shall have to go.

Now onto the decision... The belts are due in June (on time, only done 73k) and I was planning on doing cambelt, dephaser and waterpump. But now it seems a little silly spending £600 odd on a car I am just about to sell.

So, question is, do I sell as is with the belts due, no doubt for a lower price- or am I better off paying to do all the work and then selling for a higher price? Although I can't suspect I'll see all of that money back. What do you all think?

What do value the car with and without belts done. There's the answer.

What's the car you've been after for 'two' years

Expect to have people knock money off if the belts havn't been done, even if you have taken this into account people will still knock money off.
Having the belts done means more cost to you, but you can put this into the sale price and also will get you more attention as the cars ready to go with no messing by the buyer. Just make sure it's done at a specialist.

But average joe won't care if you had spent £600 to get the belts done as their mate with a 10mm spanner, ratchet screw driver and tip ex will do it for a hug.

Me. I would either the above or know the belts have been done by someone I know of on here.

This is true. I was kind of glad that the belts hadn't been done as I got it for a bargain, then could take it to a specialist knowing that it's fine afterwards.

That is a good question. I need to look through the classifieds and figure out what I think someone will pay for it. The car I've been after is a 2007 Cooper S JCWs, one owner from new and only 17k miles. He was considering selling it a couple years ago before I bought my 197 and then changed his mind and ever since I asked for first refusal.

You all make some interesting comments, I was planning on having it done at Engine Dynamics and I was hoping that it would go to a good home with an enthusiast owner. I can appreciate what you are saying about people might try and knock me down further with the belts not done.

Put it up for the full asking price that you would do if the belts were new and shiny, then let them haggle you down £200.

£400 in your back sky rocket.

Kerching.

Very kind, thank you haha.

That could be a good suggestion for PH/AT but I would definitely want it to be a fair deal for any potential ClioSport purchaser.

Thanks, we are all tight b******s on cs so it would have to be at a good price, my car is still for sale about 3 million pages back.

Hi mr. T-total.

I do only drink on a weekend mate, i have cut down a hell of a lot these past few months.

Imu prrowed ofh mmyshelgff .
Haha only pulling your leg mate. I'm hardly one to talk :)

OP I'd probably not bother mate, and just adjust the price accordingly. As others have said, some folk will probably prefer a cheap one then it's upto them if they get the belts done or not

Cricket, I can't believe its been over a month since this was updated! I'll keep it brief, a lot has happened in the last month!! The short version is: I didn't go for the Mini in the end, so the 182 is staying!! Will be getting booked in for the full works then off on a NC500 run in July. In a strange twist of circumstances, and rather unplanned, we sold our Abarth 500 instead. The 182 will stay for the next 12 months or so and then we shall review what to do next- I have a couple of cars that I would like to try but can't really 100% make my mind up on where to go next. Than you for all the input- I won't lie, I'm very happy the 182 is staying! :)
