removing top of the engine(inlet)

Am looking to remove the top to respray the inlet and the top as it could do with a tidy up but have also got a engine cover, how many bolts hold it on and could some please give me a step by step guide? As a want to try remove these tomorrow, or would a be better painting it instead of spraying or is spraying better.
