Ouch At The Insurance Renewal :-(

  Albi Blue 197
Had my 197 since November, my insurance is due for renewal January 10 so I went on to the Tesco insurance after going on the comparisons sites and being quoted aroung 1500.
Tesco then quoted me 6500 at a monthly rate of only 550 a month ... ONLY?! Are they joking me!
Anyone else having insurance issues? Or are they just generally extremely high insurance?
Bare in mind I had a Fiesta ST and that cost me around 700 a year?

Elephant/Admiral/Bell/Diamond/etc (All part of the "EUI Ltd" group) are generally the cheapest for standard cars.

Brentacre for modified/specialist cover.

* Add "better" named drivers (meaning older & clean driving record etc e.g. mum/dad/elder siblings)
* Keep it in on your drive not a street (if true)
* Limit your mileage (if true)
* High excess (Having done the whole massive excess = cheap insurance = loosing everything if you crash... I'd personally pick a sensible number here rather than an "ooooo how cheap can I make my premium")
* Fully comp not TPFT
* No mods (if true)
* Social/pleasure, no commuting or business (if true)
* Pay it all in one lump sum. This for a start can save you 20% odd...
* Multicar policy if using an EUI company & there are other cars in your household

All the usual tips.

"On the street" is cheaper than "on the drive" with EUI iirc.

I thought it went (from cheap to expensive) driveway, garage, street? Not sure, I'm positive it wasn't logical though...

Anyway, some of us are lucky enough to have the choice of all 3 so can pick the cheapest :p

Street is cheapest because the car is under lights and in the public view, therefore harder to steal, also if your car is on the drive, its clear to any would be car thiefs which house the keys are in.

Ohhh :( I find it all confusing, I always say its in a garage as I live on the A5 so street parking probably isnt the best idea :O

Also, I now have 6 years no claims yet it never seems to make any difference :( Yet protecting them years makes the quote fly up in price

Brentacre are cheaper for me than anyone else by a country mile, even on normal standard cars.

EDIT: 197 for my with a young inexperienced driver as a named driver was £900, was about £200-300 less without her on.

NEVER declare it as in a garage unless it's parked in a garage overnight every single night. If it's sitting on the driveway or on the street overnight and gets stolen, there's a good chance insurance will tell you to f**k off.

Thanks :) ... It is always in a garage as it's the only place to park in the flats I live, I say its in an office car park through the day though.
I hate car insurance companies ... they pick and choose what to charge and cover when it suits them!

your insurance will be cheaper if you tell them its parked on a drive rather than in a garage... don't believe me? try it .. my premium dropped 50 quid

also try to get a female on as named driver.. you never know that might help too

That might be it then, my named driver is 22 and has been driving 5 years whereas I am 24 and been driving 7 years with full no claims

Serious question here.....My car is insured fully comp and when at home its kept in my locked garage, my insurance company knows this.Although 5 days of the week its parked on the street outside my girlfriends overnight. If it gets stolen here, will i still get paid out??

  RB 182 FF
once again .. do not say it's parked in a garage ...it's cheaper if you say it's parked on the drive (insurance companies hike the premium up on the most common options)

as long as your girlfriend doesn't live too local you should be good

Interesting one this, as there must be a degree of flexibility surely. Does disclosing that your car is parked in a garage overnight (when it is for 345 days of the year) prevent you from taking it on holiday in the UK/to a hotel/cottage etc? What if you are working late/broken down etc?
I think a common sense approach would be taken and if a low value vehicle, they would just pay up.
If they had any sense, they should check the size of your property and how many cars you have as I'll bet there are people who disclose two or more cars at a property are parked in a garage when they have a single garage or have a car which (increasingly) would not fit in their garage!

raiderman....because everyone says it's parked in a garage so they put more on it

try it go to confused or whatever an see

  Albi Blue 197
I can see why they would void the insurance if its parked on the street outside your own house over night when you say its garaged.
But if its outside someone elses house thats not very fair as they might not have a garage :S Or am I missing the point?

another thing try tweaking your profession ..that might bring it down too

and try Aviva online only, very reasonable

Your missing the point.

My home address/parents/farm/business/where i work has a garage and I keep my car in there on the nights i stay at home but most nights its on the street outside my girlfriends.

Tbf all i have to say is i was visiting a friend if it got stolen

Yeah thats the same as me, overnight its garaged as I stated on my insurance, during the day its in a work car park, as stated on my insurance.

But I might go to my mums or a friends and park it on a street over night, but I have stated I keep it garage over night :S

I'd expect most insurance companies would apply some common sense/decency if your car was stolen from somewhere you were visiting/holidaying and it wasn't in a garage, although on the other hand I think legally they'd still be within their rights to refuse to pay out. Not entirely sure though.

if your just visiting somewhere then it is irrelevant where you tell them you park tbh. they will pay out, had this personal experience before with a car and my brother having stuff stolen from his house last Christmas eve. both where about 300 miles from the registered place.

I think think think it's 80% of the time.

So like Clancy says, his brother had no problem claiming and I guess really they'd only ever find out if they looked into it and asked your girlfriends neighbours etc and they said you parked your car there most nights.

a m8 at work did that he toled them he was a doctor when hes a window fitter ,lets say it backfired on him in a bad way now hes fucked for insurance

Wtf? How is it cheaper parked on a drive than in a locked garage???

EUI LTD'S reason is that here are lots of claims put through that involve damaging cars in garages, i.e reversing into garage walls. Alsothings falling onto the car from garage roofs. simple as that. seems bizzare but thats why they charge more for a garaged car.

and if its garaged its probably seen as worth stealing. someone would break into a garage without knowing whats in it, purely to see inside. then probably steal whatever there, whereas if that car was on the street they might not think of it

It does take the piss the cost of insuring a 172 Cup, it's down to the average owner I suppose, how many claims, how desirable to muppets etc. I pay 500 fully comp (old git) and it's the most expensive car to insure in our family!

Golf R32 - £440
Polo Blue Motion - £180
Jaguar S-Type - £400
TVR Tamora - £250!

  MK3 GTI golf 16v
your family own those cars and you drive a cup ? or where you just stating some quotes lol

Mines plummeted since I moved away from clios.

FF 172 tpft with 10k mile limit -£550
440bhp Audi S4 with all mods declared, fully comp and no mileage limit -£690!

Bloody love Brentacre!

  Radical SR3
It's bizarre isn't it?

I used to pay £400 for the Tamora and when I bought the Cup with the same insurer they wanted £690...I just couldn't fathom it.

That's what I mean. I don't know if they do this but they should as a matter of course in claims.
I am not sure that they do. If you claim for a £2,000 Clio, I think they just pay it.
