Newbie wanting to keep dream alive of a 172 ph2 (insurance dilema)

  pug 307
Hi guys,

I'm 19 in march 2012 and passed my test in november 2010 and been insured on my dad's pug 307 2.0hdi (110bhp) since however I'm only a named driver(he is main user) I have no "no claims" even though I've had no accidents. Basically I cant stand the thought of paying money to insure a slow car which I would not like to drive so I was wondering if i would be able to get insured on a 172 come me turning 19 and insure it for under 3500 as I would rather pay the extra to insure a faster car. Just became a member today after reading through the forum for many weeks and from what I have read brentacre seem to be good for people in my situation. Is my dream of owning a 172ph2 at 19 possible?
thanks in advance
cameron

It is but you will struggle, Im getting quotes of well over 2k with a years no claims and 19. Maybe look at fiesta st's ? There less horsepower and group 13 iirc where as clios are 15.

I'm 29 with ten years no claims and mines still £600 a year!! Will be looking at a specialist insurer come renewal!!!!!!

I wish mines was that m8 try brentacre there meant to be really competitive and also greenlight are good from what I hear. just hope i can get insured on a 172 i really do think its possible for under 3.5k ?

You can, just change your date of birth to make you 19, Expect it to rise when you actually reach 19 as insurance seems to not stop going up!

yeah I knew you could change your date of birth however I was under the impression it was much cheaper to ring the companies up and a lot of the specialist company's require you to ring them if you are my age so can you lie to them over the phone to get a test quote?

I had a 172 when I was 19 (I'm 20 now) I paid £830 straight out for a years insurance fully comp as the main driver. Have you tried Admiral?

When I was 19 Quinn Direct was the cheapest for me and my mates - might be for you too? I don't know how much they have changed in 3 years though.

If you spend £3500 on insurance you are mental.

mental indeed ha but what is more mental is paying £2000 for 75bhp 1.2 that couldny pull my granny out of bed when for £3500 i could have 172 bhp and im clearing £800 a month disposable income due to living with parents and holding down a full time modern engineering apprentice!

Best bet is Admiral mate, as you can see me and Stephen aren't paying stupid money but still quite a bit. However insurance prices are just going up and up so once you do turn 19 who knows what you will be paying. But as it stands £3500 a year is madness that's £291 a Month!

  Merc A class
Good luck mate! I tried most things to insure my 172 but couldn't get a quote under 4k

Why not ring up and tell them your real date of birth? The difference between being 18 and 19 won't make much difference, it's going to be high :)

  Clio 200 cup
I got my 182 when I was 18, payed £2000 for first year now I'm 19 it's only £1,400 with my yozza, coilovers, and 2118's declared.

You get driving experience discount with admiral.

Nissan Juke Turbo (190+bhp) = £600 with 2year ncb n im 20.

I reckon maybe £900 for you

  182, 6r GTi
would love it if I got a quote like that stephen lets hope so, did you have any no claims or that because that policy seems really cheap

yer iv got 2years no claims coming up 3. got my mum as a named driver and mums partner witch brought it down a fair bit to

  172 cup
admiral was cheapest for me until I was 21. I've been with sky insurance since then.

Use comparison sites to find the cheapest companies for you. Then ring them up and see if they can go any better for you and make them compete against each other. Always works for me.

comparison sights for me have been rubbish I do have the second worst postcode though so maybey thats why I was 4 grand on a civic sport 2003 1.6 110bhp:(

Cameron - what's your postcode like for insurance in general? I renewed mine two weeks ago and some insurers flatly refused to consider me when I told them the postcode. They didn't even get as far as asking what car it was I was trying to insure!

I'm 36, been driving since I was 17, clean license and 14 years no claims. And I am still paying just short of £600 on a 182 that's nearly 7 years old.

It will be possible to pay for a 172 at your age - but if the odds of a dodgy area are stacked against you, you'll have no chance imo, unfortunately....

I'm 26, 3yr NCB and my insurance is still ~£1200 for my 172! What a joke! To be fair it was ~£800 on my 1.2 Billabong so I thought f**k it and p/xed for the 172

Of course, you can also use someone else's reg plate to go off..

LOL at even considering spending £3500 to insure a CLIO! Save your money, get something with a smaller engine and build up your no claims for a couple of years. Plently of time for faster cars.
