My new powerhouse

So, I recently sold the 172. Having had it for a while, I was getting bored of it, and the new job means I don't need a daily commuter.....

Having had a couple in the past, I decided to get another Mk3 Golf VR6

I only have the pics off the ads yet. Picked it up Saturday, had to put a couple of tyres on today, and already ordered new suspension kit for it. Needs a little bit of work to get it up to a mint level, but the body is mint, and the chassis rot free, and that was the deal sealer for me.

Driving back from Edinburgh on Saturday she averaged 30mpg, and I wasn't hanging around, so that's not bad going.

And DAT NOISE!!

Great cars, ive had a few!

Loved my last one, would run like a steam train all the way to an indicated 152mph.

Make sure the chains are quiet - if you here a grating sound then the plastic tensioners are wearing. Not a fun job to do - gearbox off

Chains are silent.... cylinder number 1 is a different story. I think its been run low on oil before because its a little tappy/rattly. I knew about this though and factored the cost of a replacement lump into the deal. So I will run it til it pops, then maybe get a 2.8 24v in there from a 4mo

Love them. Starting to look really old now. But that's some of the appeal I guess.

Ive had two of them over the years and really enjoyed them both.

Just found a quick pic of one of mine.

The mulberry highline had mulberry leather.

The black highline had black leather. This was the only two options for the model at the time.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Ian that Mulberry looks superb mate. Love the paint, but really dislike the mulberry leather interior. Too much imo.

Although they do sound the nuts, I was always a little dissapointed with the performance of mine. Probably placebo effect of noise, but if it had been a tad faster woild have been epic. Guess that's price you pay for weight of motor though..

They are quite restricted in the engine dept.Mine had a RR graph for 196 bhp with an air filter, exhaust and a dastek map(i think it was dastek, its that long ago)and my mate had a silver 182 at the time which once past 80-90mph the VR would pull away quite well from it.

Thought I would chuck a couple of updated pics on while I am on here

Got it lowered on some coilovers, a stainless cat back magnex system on it, and a chavvy cone filter for the epic roar (although I am back to the standard airbox at the mo as it seems to pull better).

Then took a quick drive down to Milton Keynes to pick up this optional extra Recaro trim. Got it for a very good price.

Then came about the awesome task of removing the dash to swap the heater matrix. There is no other way around this, it's like they built the car around that singular part

Looks great and lol at ghetto repair on the splitter.

On a side note they are quite a big hot engine and you'll see better results with a panel filter in the standard box.Sucking all that hot air in the filter wont be beneficial.

It's purely for the noise, lol

Bored of this car now TBH. It's been nearly 12m, which is the usual changing point.

Think I might buy another 172, LOL

Not sure TBH. It's got the OE recaro trim, US Centre console on the way (scene points). Only on 93500m which is low for a VR. Thinking of putting it up for £1500 as it stands and £1300 with standard interior.

Ah. Maybe just above what I was thinking. It was of interest.

Always remember that gargling engine note.

It does sound bloody lovely TBH. Even on the standard airbox, you still get the muffled note.......... then notice you are into 3 figures.

Kinda price was you looking to spend fella? This came from Scotland, maybe you can take it back? ha ha
