MOT earlier and now I'm seething!!

  Clio 172 cup
Dropped my car off at Renault this morning for an MOT and received a call at 3pm telling me that my car had failed. I had my suspicions this could be the case as the front discs were a little bit worn. However, I then got told that my exhaust had a leak, causing it to fail on emissions and that the bulb to the rear number plate wasn't working aswell.

Nothing too major I thought, so I headed off to Renault only to be confronted with a bill of £590 and a scratched front wing!!

Apparently a set of standard front discs will cost £244! (I think I'll get some Brembo HC's and fit them myself thanks)

The "major leak" from my exhaust is apparently down to corrosion and will require a new centre pipe costing £269! (It's not a standard system though, it's a stainless steel Ktec Stealth, so how the hell could it have corroded?!)

Also, I was under the impression that an exhaust leak would only result in an MOT failure if it caused high emissions (I may be wrong here. Anyone?) Turns out the car passed on emissions after all, so I don't see why it needs fixing anyway.

The bulb that needed replacing apparently turns out to be a wiring fault in the rear bumper and will cost £76 to fix. Apparently water has gotten into the wiring loom over time and has damaged it. The bumper has been on the car for a week!! (I had a bump).

Then I realise that my front wing had a scratch in it. Furious isn't the word! The manager was very apologetic regarding this and has offered to respray it free of charge however the point still stands, I have been royally fucked over by Renault. Ace!

If they didnt get your permission to fix the offending things, you dont have to pay, simple as that. And they can return it to standard, and you can get it all fixed where you want. Then get a retest.

Oh and the fact that bumper has only been on a week, doesnt mean water couldnt have been getting in before you fitted it does it?

Why take it to renault for the MOT?! Surely you knew you needed to bring lubricant when you picked it up?!

Sorry, just to clarify, the work wasn't carried out. It was merely a quote as Ali pointed out.

Ali - The problem is, that my car (which I've recently had resprayed) has been scratched and I've been failed for an irrelevant exhaust problem and quoted nearly £300 to remedy it!

Apart from the scratch on front wing (which I'd be livid about) don't see what you've got to complain about. It's a Renault dealer and they always charge over the odds.

Have a meeting with the manager of the branch and explain that you want your car put back to normal and you will not be paying for the work that has been done or you will take legal action as you have been over charged for the work and also the work that has been carried out was un-necessary also the scratch that is on the wing you will need sorted and that you will not be chaged for any of it.

Stainless will rust, but how bad depends on the quality of the steal. How often you drive, if the car sits alot for long periods? Doesn't help with all the salt that's been spread recently. You had it a while?

So really, you haven't been 'royally f**ked over' by Renault at all. You've taken it to them for an MOT and they have failed your car on certain bits and then quoted you THEIR price to replace them.

Ok the scratch is their fault but they have offered to repair it.
So.......whats your beef?

Never put your car to a dealer for an MOT, simples;)

LOL. Why? In my experience over the past two years my dealer has charged me LESS than anywhere else. And the car got a full check over as standard.

Unfortunately on the last MOT they broke my splitter driving it off the ramp but they VERY quickly ordered me a new one.

I have a couple of mates working for Renault dealers.....one of them is a Renault Sport owner.
Apparently the most difficult, arrogant and troublesome customers they have are.........RenaultSport customers.

I can't imagine why......;)

Maybe because we actually care about our cars and have some clue about them?

I have to say I got great service from Sewards in Portsmouth when my aircon pump went, but it seems the general feeling is that Renault dealers/service centres are not the best.

When you are a car fanatic you want your car treated with kid gloves - they even broke your splitter!

This website exists so that you can find the right specialist to do these jobs - I only drop by to Renault to pop in and shout c**ts at the top of my voice...

...from time to time :approve:

LOL You're from Bristol so that would make sense... ;)

That's what you get from going to the Stealers... :dead:

Fix all the points yourself or through a trusted mechanic and get it re-MOT-ed @ the Stealer.

I've honestly never had any issues with them. Hense my sudden shock at today's events.

Regarding my car: Hopefully the scratch will get repaired to a professional standard by Renault. I can get a pair of Brembo HC discs and fit them myself. The bulb issue is being referrred back to the garage that fitted my bumper last week and the exhaust is being looked at in the morning.

Apologies for the rant, I was just very pissed off at the time, as I'm sure you can appreciate.

A leak in the exhaust, emission failing or not, is a MOT fail unless it is VERY small. As said earlier stainless steel will still rust over time as they are never made from high quality steel, however I would check whether its down to corrosion or not. I've had a Renault garage quote £500 to change a water pump on my grandad's Scenic when it did not need doing, I wouldn't put it past them to lie about this.

Danec: Thanks for clearing that one up mate. As pointed out, I'm off to the place that fitted the exhaust to see what they say. I'll keep you posted. lol

any reason holdcroft stoke would be bad? just asking as not long had a car from them lol

lol, no reason! ~I bought mine from there! As it's a renault dealer in stoke i thought there may be a small chance!

They were spot on with me! :)

Renault told me my rear discs and pads were heavily worn at 12,000 miles. I sold it on 57,000 and two track days, with the original equipment still fitted. Every Renault dealer I used was run by arseholes. I'd certainly never go to one for an MOT. That's just my experience though.

I think this is the case for most Renault Dealers unless you know them well, then they look after you! I needed 8 of them white plastic gromits that hold the screws for the interior, the guy dug me out about 15 or so and didnt charge me for them!

Turns out that the exhaust issue, the one that was going to cost nearly £300 to fix, was a lose clamp.. Yes, a lose clamp. No corrosion at all. It's just cost me £7 to get fixed.

I can only assume that I must have knocked it on a speed bump or something.

There's a lot to be said for local garages with people you know/trust or try one of the places that only do MOT's and no repairs.

They must make a fortune with people who just agree to having the work carried out.

Yup, was in renault getting my bonnet catch done a few months ago and a guy had brought his 8 year old laguna in and the mechanic said it was a coil spring, which they could change for just over £300 and the guy just agreed straight away.

Mechanic didnt even say he should get 2 (presume they must of only had 1 in stock) and the guy didnt question him at all

The bulb/bulb holder/wiring, I can understand. The front discs, I can understand. The pricing (to an extent), I can understand. But this really does take the piss, if I'm honest.

Indeed. They know that 50% of people will just say "OMG really? Hmmm, well ok. You're the experts".

I'm sure its not just Renault either. I had my Peugeot 306 XSi serviced shortly after buying it, and the dealer told me that the rear suspension bushes were fucked (It was a known and genuine problem with these cars). Several years later, it had passed many MOT's and never had any related mechanical issues. Sadly, as with almost any business, the motor trade is rife with c***s ripping people off, and they have no moral problem hiding behind the perceived trust of a main dealer.

Have to be honest it was holdcroft crewe i had the issue with, brought 2 cars from the hanley one but the aftersales, service departments have been shocking. Getting better but still not up to standard. The one time holdcroft hanley had the vee they did a cracking job, admittedly it was only a washer jet but they covered the steering wheel, seat and floor, and were done well within the time stated. Still would not want them to do the cambelt service though, but not all dealers are the same, ezra sugden in worksop are a cracking dealer- where my car will be going for the service.
