JMS RS2 172 Cup Track Build

  Clio 172 Cup/F80 M3
Hello all

Been on here a little while now, just thought I would pop up a build thread as I do enjoy reading them.

Little bit of background etc...

Bought my clio 172 Cup around a year ago of Keiran off here. At the time I had my 420bhp Astra van that I was using as a track car but I didn’t have the time to keep on top of maintenance so had to get rid.

It was rapid, but time for something that wouldn’t need much time to keep on top of.... yes I was quite wrong about that [emoji23]

Pic of the Clio when I bought it from K.

First track day in it at Blyton Park, was spot on & faultless all day.

So once I had done a track day or two, I decided to do a couple of upgrades.

Bought an eBay special cage, as I wanted a harness bar and a little more protection.... [emoji849][emoji85]

Made some brake cooling ducts using some plastic funnels and some intake pipe. I’m a tight Yorkshireman that didn’t want to pay £80 for some plaggy jobbys.

Got cage fitted prior to Cadwell Park track day (no pics ☹️) but a pic after...

So after my trip to Cadwell I continued with the mods and fitted the pure Motorsport top mounts.

So the next track day was Croft, which the car performed pretty damn well all day. See below track day footage [emoji4]

At the end of the video I swiftly exited the track as I had some pretty high temps!!

Later found out I had a bit of an air lock and the thermostat was cream crackered! So replaced the thermostat and re bled the system.

And had a bit of a wheel swap with the DCi rep sat behind. [emoji16]

So after Croft it was time for a little bit of TLC and some tidying up!

Was great fun at Croft but had a few bits that needed sorting. The Clio was off the road for around 6 months whilst I sorted the car.

In the garage waiting for bits....

Then got this from Mike, who sold his 172 and bought a bodied 182 [emoji4]

So got the PMS shifter fitted, had a bit of trouble along the way but with Mikes help we managed to get all gears and reverse (if your gentle!)

Whilst the car was in the air doing the PMS shifter I cleaned up the underside and arches and did some undersealing.

I painted the inside of the car, roof and floor black. And then the rear of the car mondial blue. Replaced a load of brake lines (not the best lol but will do until I get braided lines) and also added a adjustable pressure valve as all the proportioning valve was knackered.

Next I painted the cage, all rattle can jobbys so not the best but it be rite [emoji1303]

Excited for the results of the jenveys. I’ve just bought some and it will be going there for mapping as soon as they’re fitted. What cams are in it?

Great day today over at EFI. Chris is an absolute gent and worked his magic indeed!

As above are Mikes Jenvey figures. Below his 182 on the dyno.

Was really happy how mine performed, must be a healthy engine!

It ran 195 hp and 151.2 ft lbs, very impressed. But most of all it drives really well!! See below a nice graph [emoji3]

Although a crap end to the day with the alternator failing, sorry people on the M60 [emoji85]

Evening all

So prior to mapping I had a few gremlins along the way. Haven’t driven the car much obviously as it wasn’t road legal.

I had an issue with it getting to between 3-4K rpm and then it feeling like it was hitting the limiter. Really irritating as I just wanted to drive the car!!

So checked literally everything with Mike, swapping bits over to cancel everything out. As I was literally about to give up I tried the crankshaft position sensor and it cleared it! Great success (insert Borat meme here).

So after that I did a few more bits including moving the battery to the boot using a kit I made up. This was to provide enough space for the RS2 inlet. Also I got Mikes fibreglass bonnet from him [emoji1303][emoji16] and fitted that too [emoji3]

Few jobs to do next....

Fix alternator or replace!

Sort the exhaust as it is incredibly loud [emoji86]

Done a few bits since the last post.

Got round to fitting a new alternator whilst trying to move house! [emoji28]

Was a bit of a chew as with the RS2 inlet on it made it difficult to pull it out from the top so I had to remove the alternator bracket from the block. Took a little longer than wanted but she’s now charging [emoji1303]

Tried the car in the new garage, going to fit fine but will be a squeeze to do anything on it ☹️

Also tried on the headlight intake that I made [emoji51]
