Insurance is rubbish!

  Dynamique 1.2 16v
Was looking to get insurance on my current clio, but asked them about lowering the car, apparently Liverpool Victoria don't insure modified cars? Really gutted! What should I do? Do I have any options?:( don't want to have a car I'm not allowed to do anything to;/

Can I just swap mid policy then? Only took it out in January!

And I looked at greenlight website, I'm only 19 :(

You should stick with your policy mate trust me! , I kept changing my policies over when I was 17-19 and that way you don't build up any now claims. I'm 20 now and only have 1 year! , Lowering your 1.2 will make no difference mate honestly your not missing out on much! , Iv'e been there & done it..

Just build up your no claims before getting something in a year or two with a bit more power ;)

  Dynamique 1.2 16v
Hmm this is a very wise statement! It's a 1.2 which I likely to have for 1-2 years whilst I save up for a meatier choice of car!:p will look into mods next time I look at new cars and insurance:) cheers:)

Definitely don't put big mods on... Do things you can get your money back on.

i made a partial rep of my old car.

Sold the rear bumper (after losing out getting it sprayed)
sold the wiper blank, cost me nothing
Sold the turinis (lost out because I had to buy tyres for them)
sold the spoiler (again, lost out after getting it sprayed)
sold the coilovers for what I paid for them
cant get rid of the 6x9s lol
still have the 1*2 bumper that fits non sport wings because nobody wants it lol

Literally 3 months after finishing the car I found I could afford a proper one so sold up lol! Hindsight is a great thing lol

I literally wanted to, 40mm lower, colour code side bump strips, get a small sub (hpf/lpf send all lows to the sub keeps mid/highs upfront) get some 172 alloys (I'm already on 15" dynamique so not bothered for 1 inch more on wheels, rs grille and black diamonds, wind deflectors.. nothing big just small things. Still worth doing or not? :(

  Listerine & Poledo
All the colour-coding should be fine, if you've got a reasonable person on the phone to check it. Ditto the sub (got one for sale if you need one ;) ).

It's da sik Lowz that will have you bent over a bed like Miss Delaware.

Keep the ride height, you'll be thankful for it next time you hit a speed bump too fast

Yeah mate so all the above would be fine apart from my sikkk 40millzz of lowzzz bruv get me? Only want the lowz. Because at macdonalds that's what matters. Pfffft!!

Yeah I mean my car doesn't sit like a tractor ImageUploadedByTapatalk1362427368.272564.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1362427382.253482.jpg so I'm not too fusse about that tbh :)

Pm me about the sub mate! I'm interested :)

Having been there and done that, I can guarantee you will regret it mate.

Put the money you'd spend modding your car to one side and save for something else.

  FF Clio 182
I did the same, bought a 1.2 as my first car. No point modding it you will get no power in return, so keep it standard. Use it to build up at least a years no claim and as I now 21 I plan on getting a 182 :)

  Dynamique 1.2 16v
I keep saying to myself it's pointless to mod this, yeah I'm 19 ill keep it standard for now gets some NCD and save for a newbie! Would love a 197 ngl. But that won't be happening for a long time!:(

You would be surprised!

1 years no claims at 19/20 should see a 197 insurance at under 1k in most areas. Obviously it depends on your driving history with regards to accidents etc & your postcode but they are fairly easy to insure compared to a 172 / 182 !

  Dynamique 1.2 16v
I said that, I'm 17 xD

I'm with elephant, I've declared all my mods, however it was mighty expensive.

Yeah but.. SHUTUP!;) yeah I'm with LV and right now I'm not feeling the love. Would it be much hassle to change now? Seen as though I've only had the insurance like two months lol?

Ahhh hellzyeahh!! Well that has perked me up abit about this situation! I'm at £1800 ATM with courtesy car, windscreen and legal cover? Is that good seen as though I only passed in November.
And before anyone asks I didn't need to drive when I was 17/18 because I commuted to work on the train lmao! ;)

Just wait it out - would imagine modified 1.2's are harder to flog as well when you move onwards and upwards. Spend the money you've saved on insurance on beer and going out and then time will soon fly and you'll be able to get an RS and look back and think you made the right choice.

Yeah they would be because people looking to buy them are first time drivers like me! Sounds good to me :):p

TBH, in hindsight I kinda wish I left the car standard and saved for a better car...

But at the time of buying all the mods, all that was going through my mind was "YOLO" LOL!

Don't throw money away on it, I understand its tempting to be proper baws but all that money could be used for, I dunno:-

Fuel
Tax
MOT
Servicing
Tyres
Fuel

You know, the stuff that lets you actually drive :)

Sik Lowz n bodykit doesnt impress anyone just sat in a drive with no fuel in it

  Dynamique 1.2 16v
I might still do the odd little thing, that I can change when I come to sell it a year or two down the line, tbh if I'm good shouldn't take me too long to get my savings up to be able to afford a 197(yn) finger crossed!:(

Are the Insurance companies that bothered about lowering a car by 35/40mm? Thought if you declared you'd probably only have to pay a couple extra quid per month. I was also sure if you had 15" alloys and changed them for another set of 15s, then it wouldn't really matter, as it's not like you're upgrading the size. There's all sorts of rumours flying about with this sort of thing, though.

  Listerine & Poledo
They'll be bothered when you try and claim.

As in, you'll fail by having them.

Either do it properly, and declare or
Be prepared to get dry-bummed if you have them and total your motor / it gets burnt or
Dont bother*

*: for a 1.2 Mk.3, this would be the obvious solution.

LV only accept certain modifications for under 25's at present.

If you do not disclose a modification - and you've confirmed on a public forum that you did it anyway then they are within theyre rights to void your policy - and you therefore have no insurance - but the prospect of a nice CCJ for any claims cost the insurer has to pay under the Road Traffic Act.

Regarding are insurers that bothered - it depends who it is. Different companies have different underwriting guidelines and will accept different things at a different price - or may not accept it at all.

We deal with a specialst wing of liverpool victoria who cover all types of modifcations. LV Direct dont generally insure more than a few mods but as a specialist broker we have access to schemes with them that can cater for all types of mods including roll cages and nitrous oxide. (drivers 21 or over)

We have been a partner broker of theirs for 17 years.

Well just to make things clear I haven't modded my car now haha! Saving and Putting the money towards getting a mk3 next year :)

As a named driver on my Mk3, I'd love to stick alloys on and lower by 35mm. On co-op insurance paying about £1500, with my mums no claims on it. How much you reckon these mods would add to the monthly price? Monthly I pay about £130. Obviously my Mum would have to call the insurance company and I'm also guessing they may be thinking 'why the hell does a 46 year old woman want to make these mods', ha.

£1500 as a named driver on a 1.2! you must have literaly just passed your test or your insurer is just bending you over. im 19 with 1 and a half years no claims and my insurance is £1150 with Elephant for my 197!

Ye man if your looking to by another car next year just hold up with the mods and save up for some decent mods on the better car ;)

Insurance can be more expensive when youre a named driver, Mine was cheaper on my own policy with dad as a named driver rather than his policy and me being named. that being said i am still paying £2306, 1.2 05 plate :/

i was lucky buying my car,

option a - 05 plate, lowered already with alloys etc £1400
option b - 02 plate fully standard £2150

lol

One thing you could do it just lower it but not declare it! This isn't the best option as it has the possibility of invalidating your policy but as long as it only slightly lowered you would be ok. Just don't deck it! Better option would be to just save all your money and use that to buy a Sport when insurance is more reasonable. I lowered my 1.2 and didn't declare it, if you had an accident I doubt they would check the springs as long as the car doesn't have heavy modification. But just so you are away no declaring mods in fraud kind of. The choice is yours end of the day.
