Immobiliser problem - car won't engage the starter

I've got an intermittent problem with my immobiliser. Sometimes the car starts no
Issues. Sometimes it is dead.
When I click the car locked sometimes the car beeps at me but I'm not sure what that means.

I managed to get it to start today after locking and unlocking as much as possible but can't see a pattern.

This is a real problem now. Any ideas where to start?

The car had a replacement engine recently but it was done by Dan @ SJM so likely done right and unrelated.

EDIT Also to clarify the starter won't fire at all. So perhaps this is a key issue? Does the immobiliser allow the starter to turn normally?

More than likely the key. I had this problem with my old 172. I kept the fob for unlocking the car but took the actual key out it & put it in the bog spec key case/fob for non central locking clios.

Worked a treat.
