Honda Civic EG Project

  Clio 182 FF
I have been away from the Honda scene for a couple of years now and had various Clio 1*2's in the meantime but have always missed lure of a modified Honda. My first car was a Civic EG so i have always had a special place for them.

When this mint example came up for sale with just 30k on it with no rust, i had to have it. I have big plans for it, they have such a following the amount of aftermarket parts available is ridiculous.

The manual conversion is straight forward. The engine is going to be change for either a K20 or a Skunk2 tuner B18 a friend is selling.

You must've been on CSC at some point?
I have a HUGE soft spot for Milano red EGs..
My old one: (B16A, DC2 Suspension etc etc)
th_Image006.jpg

Back on topic, rust free original EGs are so so rare - what are your plans with it?

  Clio 182 FF
Yes I was on CSC back in the day! I actually remember your eg, anymore pics of it?

Huge plans for mine, looking for at least 230hp n/a, manual conversion, full rebush, Meister r coilovers, all the strut braces, black interior swap, Recaros, bys lip and side skirts, jdm boot, spoon spoiler, dc2 steering rack and Arb's. Maybe a 5 stud conversion from dc2. Big brake conversion front and rear.

The aftermarket following for these is endless so no doubt more ideas will be added to that list.

Hundreds, lol. I won't clog your build thread up too much though. Just have a click around my photobucket. I'd love to know the whereabouts of it now, it went to a member of CL after me.

Plans sound perfect, if it was me I'd go B18 for a little more 'original' spec.
Back in the CSC days I was on the admin panel until it all went tits up after another admin member fecked us up. Good times though.

Little Update: I am progressing with the build slowly and just stripping everything down at the moment. What I thought was a rust free shell is not quite as I thought…. I found a small patch of rust upon removal the side skirt where the sill meets the arch. It appears someone has repaired it in the past with good old filler… GREAT! So I got onto a local mobile auto restoration man who came and sorted the rust to the nearside rear. Upon grinding back to bare metal it was evident someone had cut a 5p size hole out in the past and fillered over it. Not being one to do thinks by halfs I had it all cut out and a new inner and outer arch/sill fabricated, replacing metal with metal. All the surface rust inside the sill was ground off, treated with Bilt Hamber Dynax S-50 to prevent rust coming back. The inside face of all the fabricated pieces was also coated with zinc primer before welding in place. It was nice to see it all being done rather than handing it over to be bodyshop where they could be doing anything and they generally don’t replace the inner arch pieces let alone coat the inner pieces with zinc primer.

I have also purchased a newly rebuilt B18C6 from the Integra Type R.

My concentrations are now aimed at getting the front end sorted. I am currently on with stripping it all down, seams are being filled with seam sealer. All spots of surface rust are being ground down with wire brush back to bare metal, 2 coats of Bilt Hamber Electrox then behind the wings and bumper and all underneath is to be coated withBilt Hamber UB. All cavities, I.e. Chassis legs, and front cross member are to be filled with Bilt Hamber Dynax S-50.

That’s it for now!

More little updates, i seem to have spent ages working on the car yet made little process. I am just taking my time and ensuring all rust has been removed before undersealing.

I wasn't entirely happy with the O/S/R rear arch so i have carefully cut out part of the outer arch and the inner arch was pitted in places, most people would of left it but it will only get worse so made the call to cut it out so there is no doubt. Separating the inner arch from the outer arch was a painfully slow process but it gave me chance to clean up inside the arch followed by 3 coats of Bilt Hamber Zinc Primer. Now i just have to wait for a slot with the fabricator so he can come round carry out all the metalwork.

Most of the front end has now been undersealed and the front arches have been scrubbed and resealed. The wing panels had tiny bits of rust so i cleaned that up an zinc primed before reinstalling. The sills are pretty much mint so they have again been zinc primed and undersealed.

I had always intended on 15' Rota Circuit 10's so i ordered them just before Christmas only to find they have been discontinued, then by some miracle a brand new set came up on the CRX forum so i snapped them up then bought some Michelin Pilot Sport 3's.

Bought an ITR Front Subframe and Rack, stripped the rack back and swapped over the p/s hoses from my eg rack as there were in much better condition. The track rod inners and ends have been ordered. I wasnt prepared to pay Honda prices and couldnt get hold of Lemforder joints anywhere. After ringing around my options were Blueprint or Moog, I opted for Moog as the make their own components rather than reboxing like Blue print. The Americans seem to swear by Moog and they come with 2years Warranty. I have Hardrace steering rack bushes on order to finish off the rack. Subframe is being sent off to be powder coated.

Considered the H22? Bit cheaper than a K20 and one of the Time Attack Civics runs one very successfully. I know the K20 is the better option but if cost is ever an issue the H22 is a great engine.

Not really I love the way b-series rev their nuts off so I have bought a newly rebuilt b18 from an integra type r.

The time attack car is a mate of mine, really quick car but he has done a fair bit of work to get it sitting right as they generally tilt forward and you end up with oil starvation hence not as popular.

I went in a k20 eg the a few weeks back running 240hp and it was mental. Makes me wish i had gone k-series but the quality bolt on mods I have and the Hondata ecu remapped by TDI north I will see 200bhp+.

The car is coming along nicely now.... 8 weeks till the Nurburgring trip.

The suspension is now built up, just need to set the geometry up so that it can be driven to Grinspeed for a proper setup.

I have ordered a set of 195/50/15 AD08R tyres to go on the Rotas.

After a long wait from KAM Racing the Carbon Lorraine RC5+ Pads turned up. Brakes bled and feel good. I have had the ABS modulator off so this may or may not need to be bled later?
My brake setup is:
Blue HEL Brake hoses
ATE TYP200 Brake Fluid (Super Racing Blue's replacement)
282mm front discs with Carbon Lorraine RC5+ pads
260mm Rear discs with Pagid Pads
1' Master Cylinder

So with the interior, brakes and suspension sorted I turned my attention to the engine. I had bought a new GATES Timing belt, Koyo tensioner and waterpump but after investigating they all looked like new. The engine was apparently rebuilt 2000miles ago and this backs it up so I chose not to do the timing belt and instead fitted the Fidanza 3.4KG flywheel and Honda OEM clutch kit.

Bodyshop: So the car has been painted, I had both rear quarter panels, side strips and the JDM tailgate sprayed. The bodyshop did a great job and the colour match which I was most worried about was spot on and blended in nicely. The plastic strips on the rear arch lips arent being replaced so I had the bodyshop coat the lip with stonechip for added protection. I opted against spraying the lip and left it black to break up the colour.
Fresh out the bodyshop:

Next stop was the MOT which flew through - Now all road legal but still off the road until it could be remapped and suspension setup.

Then after what seems like an eternity as I just wanted to drive the thing, TDI North were able to map the car. It made 208bhp which I was more than happy with. The IAT was reading -15 permanently so Paul took one off an s2000 to map it which meant I came away needing to find a new sensor but all in all a good day.

Power Run:

I managed to source an s2000 IAT pretty quickly and now the car was running brilliantly.

This was the offender:

There was just one last spot now before the pending trip to Nurburgring and that was the Geometry. For this I left it with Stevie from Grinspeed and with his recommendations the setup we agreed on was:
Camber
Front 1.7degrees
Rear 1.4 degrees

Toe
Front 1mm out
Rear 1mm in

This transformed the car and gave me the opportunity to really test it out. It became clear the rear end was stiff, very stiff! Which I put down to the polybushes in the rear ARB. It was making the rear hop around which felt very sketchy and unnerving especially with a ring trip around the corner so I took it off and the car felt much more stable and gave me more confidence in the car.

A week before I was due to set off to Germany the ABS light came on so I was able to source a new rear ABS sensor:

So I put alot of time and money into the car to get it ready for the Ring and pushed hard in the last month to get it ready in time. I would of liked to put a few more miles on it before I went but the car was brilliant all weekend. I managed to get 9 laps in, I had hoped for more but the Sunday was a wash out and didnt want to risk pushing the car too hard on a wet track. I filmed all my laps on the GO PRO so will put one up when I get chance.

Anyway... a few pics from the weekend.

Met up with Spenny D a few weeks back in this K20 EG and got a few photos:

Had the rocker cover and strut brace powder coated in blue along with a few other bits to brighten up the engine bay:

I have had a spoon spoiler laying around for ages so tried that on and I think it looks much better. The fit isn't brilliant so I will probably end up getting another that fits better. I also added a Civic SIR tailgate decal.

Going to try some spoon mirrors and amber corners next. I have also order some Phillips xtreme H4 headlight bulbs and some LED bulbs for the sidelights and rear number plate lights. I have managed to source a spare Koluki seat so I can use the material to wrap my long jdm armrest so it all matches.

Lastly, I did an Oulton Park trackday on Tuesday, the weather was great all day so I was really able to push the car. The carbone lorraine pads were going off after 4 or so laps I think I need to look at brake ducts or the RC6 pad variation. I had a lucky moment on the last corner with the accelerator pedal becoming stuck on the mat which nearly saw me in the gravel trap!

Looking at the go pro seems my lap times were between 2.09 - 2.14 secs.

Just a few more pics from the day:

Excellent, look forward to that mate. I toyed with the idea of getting one of these a while back, but Christ they seem to hold their value. Back in the day they weren't worth a w;)k. Well they held their money but they have appreciated quite a bit. I love them though and they sound awesome.

Love these, I need to have a proper JDM civic at some point. That style of Japanese street racing really suits these.

I take the mats out of my car for trackdays and 'enthusiastic drives' for this very reason :)
