Gearbox oil help

I've jacked the car up and there appears to be a lot of gearbox oil on the gear selector itself where is this likely to be leaking from? I don't know whether its relevant but the car is making noises in 5th gear and when going from 4th - 5th it makes a High pitch squeak.
Thanks

Anybody have any ideas? I've cleaned all of the oil off of the surface and am trying to locate where the leak is coming from. Is there a common place anywhere? Just worrying me as its the gearbox area.

through the hole on the front of the gearbox, theres a plastic thumbscrew for you to undo first, I use a funnel and a length of hose to get it in there, once the fluid starts to leak out the hole you know the level is correct (if the vehicle is on level ground)

I use a bit of hosepipe, just needed to put a slice in the end so it would come up and squeeze in.

Have you managed to find out what was wrong with the gearbox? I've got exactly the same problem, leak, 5th gear noise and a high pitch when changing into 5th.
Spoke to a local Renault specialist who said it sounds like a bearing in the box, I've left it with them so should hear what they think tomorrow.

I haven't tbh. BUT to fill it up I had to put in nearly 2 litres of gearbox oil. The noise in 5th gear is barely noticeable now, much much quieter but the little squeak from 4th - 5th is still there. All in all, worth topping up. Let us know what is said tomorrow about your box!

Yeah I put 1 litre in last weekend and it did reduce the noise but it's still there. Personally, I think the leak over time has made the gearbox worse and it sounds like it's time for a rebuild. If that's the case I'm weighing up my options as to how I go about it.
I will do, hopefully they'll get in touch tomorrow.

I think once its gotten bad enough that the noise is there (must be bearings), it won't then magically disappear unfortunately - which is what I was hoping for lol. Have to say, I'm now not so worried about the noise as its very very faint and quiet.... But am slightly worried about the squeaky noise. Really don't know what that is.

Spoke to the garage yesterday and told them to strip the box, I think there were too many issues for me to just ignore sorting it. As for a diagnosis, they couldn't really say until they've had a good look as to what needs doing. I'm hoping to speak to them this morning. They seemed to think the clutch release bearing needed sorting as well, on top of the leak and the 5th gear issue...It needed doing really. Won a couple of quid over the weekend which has helped soften the blow!
Will keep you posted if I hear anything.

Did your car when putting into gear and pulling away judder at low revs? Mine does that and it does need the clutch release bearing doing. Thanks mate!

No judder at all really, only difficult to get into 1st gear sometimes, more so when starting from cold. Do you hear a quiet squealing noise on tick over then when you press your clutch it disappears? That is what mine has done since owning the car and am guessing is the clutch release bearing.
Briefly spoke to the garage earlier as they only just got around to investigating, they said the 5th gear teeth have worn down and that the bearings seem to be loose. Don't think the leak and having low oil helped matters. I'm calling when I've finished work to see how the rest of the gearbox looks and what the plan of action is from then on.

Heard from the garage this afternoon, they found significant wear on the input shaft bearing and selector forks. Looks like there are three bearings and two selector forks needed which is going to cost £160, the release bearing is included in price. Apparently the clutch showed minimal signs of wear, I just said replace it whilst its stripped, for peace of mind. As for the leak, they said something about the driveshaft not being installed properly which was causing quite a leak, so not the gear selector. I'd keep yours topped up as such as you can.
They've been really good to deal with actually and if the costs work out okay I'll head there again when the cambelt is due.
