So.. On the way to work this morning, steady away no erratic ott spirited driving, got into Peterborough with only about 5 miles to work. I look down to find the Stop warning light and engine light on, I pulled over to the side to find steam coming out the grille. I open the bonnet but nothing obvious until I look at the Coolant bottle which was empty. f**k. I must add the temp gauge was well over on maximum. I look for a garage and saw there was an esso garage down the road so I ran down and got 2 big bottles of water. Ran back and turned the motor on and poured them in and it drunk both the bottles with the coolant bottle still empty. I had no water left so I had to do something.. I turn the car on and drive to the garage which was about 1/3 of a mile. The engine gauge slowly started going up but never reached 3/4 I stopped at the garage fourcourt and popped the bonnet and looked under the car. The thing was dumping that s**t out, I could of gone swimming if I wasn't so pissed off! I gave my dad a bell and told him the situation, he and I agreed I wouldn't be a cylinder head as that would be a very slow trickle and I always warm her up before I do any sort of accelerations. So he reckons it will be either the rad, rad pipes or maybe the water pump gasket's fucked or maybe the pump itself. Kwik fit is next door to the garage so I took it there and he reckons its radiator related, he said he's going to have to get the top bloke on it and he's not coming till this afternoon. What a shitter, now I'm sat at the bus station depressed as f**k and expecting to get bent over a good radiator. What a lovely morning.

I had this last week - mystery disapearing water - It was the water pump, it wasnt the gasket it was the bearing seal. £35 (GSF) (or £65 if you want genuine) for the part and a few hours tinkering and complaining about lack of room and it was fixed.

Could be coolant hoses, water pump or radiator rusted through.

the radiator went on mine about 18 months ago. Easy enough job and not expensive.

The most distressing part of this story is that your car is now in the hands of a Kwikfit! Whatever the outcome I think I'd just want to get rid of it after them monkeys have been near it!

(Only joking, I'm sure it's something and nothing and will soon be sorted)

You had me shaking for a minute there mike, thanks for the last bit haha best of all my girlfriend was with me and being really sympathetic and saying she will dig into her house fund if she has too, bless her

Turns out the water pump bearing has collapsed. The auxiliary belt has disappeared completely, The cam belt needs changing, Pump bearing needs replacing, the pump itself is also damaged.

All in all we got them down to £650, They also said they'd throw in a winter check.. Windscreen wash, anti freeze and they also said they'd check the brakes and pads and clean up the callipers to make sure they're working as should.

I just hope they do the timing properly..

Im sure a specialist could do it for a similar price

Don't let them do the belts will just cost double that when they do it wrong to then have to take it some where else to sort it

Mate- please dont waste your gf's money at Kwik Fit. Get it done right first time.

They sent me on my way with brake discs which were "fine" and no brake fluid. Dont trust them.

It's too late lads, I know what you're saying but at the time I had no choice. I need the car on the road. When I get the car home i'm going to go through it myslef the best I can. The car does however need a service, of which I will be taking to a specialist to have it toothcombed.

Im confused, if the aux belt disappeared and the cambelt needs changing, doesn't that sound like the aux took out the cambelt, and there's further damage?

You are insane letting Kwik Fit do the job.

I know you think you have no other choice, but they won't have started work today. Pay someone to recover the vehicle from KF to a specialist. The amount of problems you'll save yourself is unreal.

This. I'd rather ask my nan to change my cambelt than Kwik Fit!

Something doesn't sound right either. The aux belt and the cam belt?

Id ask them to stop work and pay them what you need to now. Get a reputable garage even to do it, just now a high street chain.

Yup cut your losses now and get it off them and to a specialist. It'll be better in long run, unless you're very very lucky.

Whilst theres a good chance they will f**k it up, ask them to document what they did and how they did it, that way if it does break you can prove it was there error thats caused it.

Why would you want that?

Just get it too a specialist!

I love it when people come onto a forum and ask for advise and ignore it all.

go to kwikfit, they're great and I'm sure your car will be as good as new.
may aswell buy 4 new tyres with 25% off too. :)

I like your tactics!

Definitely got Kwik fit, the mechanics there are top notch, really good value for money and will do a fantastic job.

£565 using genuine parts... that would be to change the timing belt without dephaser with a new aux belt kit, water pump and coolant flush/change.

Corby get the car recovered to a specialist

1) why does the timing belt need doing??

2)why replace pump bearings it can't be done and pumps are cheap anyway.

3)Aux belt has gone! Where round the crank pulley? Timing belt slipped?

4) kwikfit will not have the correct tools,if they have i will pay the bill.

5)kwikfit will not know the correct process

6) winter check f**koff it has no coolant in it so what they going to do there?

7)brakes f**koff again they will say you need pads and discs guranteed. And they have no idea on the workings of brake calipers never mind see if they are working!!

8) Have you got £1200 for a new engine? Because some valves are going to get bent.

9) windscreen wash flol.

And 10) For once please listen to what is being said . Phone them first thing and tell them to leave the car as you are getting it collected.

Phone Mick above he isn't far from you i think??? See if he can assist;)

  A special one.
If they where to do the job and replace the pump then the cooling system should be re filled with anti freeze anyway.

Please please get Mick to do it, KF will fcuk it up big time.

Look lads, your saying Kwik fit are going to do a s**t job, not the techie in the garage. Do anyone of you know this lad? Do anyone of you know the experience he's got? I belive in giving people a chance and until they f**k up i'm not going to **** them off. It's their job to do the job properly, if the job does not get done properly however I will come down on the like a ton of s**t! They sound like good people and are doing their upmost best to help me out, so why not give them a chance. You all may have your cars sent to a specialist and then get anal when no one follows the crowd, but at the end of the day my car was sat at the side of road spewing its s**t and I need my car fixed ASAP I don't care who does it as long as they do it right!! They said they can do it I will hold them to that and I didn't have time at the time to get someone to tow, load it to a specialist. I'll also say that if this guy does do a good job on my car I'll be back on this forum and telling you all you're wrong! If however my motor does churn it's ass I will say you're all right I should of told them no and put it on a 1st class flight to the nearest specialist. I'll hear back from them soon and hopefully ill be back behind the wheel tomorrow. Right now a bottle of cider will be nice.

Thats fair enough mate, not a dig but 'if' it goes tits up which from seeing previous issues it probably will, or at least wont be timed up properly. And you come here to make a thread don't spit the dummy out when everyone says told you so ;).

One thing I'd ask them first, do they have the timing tools for the clio sport as if not they will probably do it with the tip ex which is not ideal at all!

Cheap parts will be used, but its up to you at the end of the day, Kwik Fit as a brand have a very bad name amongst enthusiasts but the general populace still use them and i have no idea why!

I would get the car shipped over to Mick but thats only because if it was my car I would want want the job doing right by someone who knows exactly what they are doing, that way I would be more confident it wasn't going to fail on me again.

Think about it, you lose a day getting it to Micks but you save weeks in potential problems after kwik fit have touched it, if you car really is that vital letting kwik fit sort it really isn't wise!

That's also fair enough Adam, like I said I'll leave them to it. They need to get the belt kit in from their supplier, so it would be rather stupid of them not to check the tools to do it. Even Quasimodo would know that.
I'll know straight away wether it's right or not if not I'll be taking it back with the receipt and my dad says he'll also take a trip down to meet and greet..
the'll get it right 1st time then eh

Bear in mind I charge £675 for cambelt, dephaser, aux kit, oil, filter, water pump and coolant, and all of that would be genuine parts. Your getting charged far too much IMO.

Ask to see the cam locking tools if you want to let them do it. If they are silver (probably laser) they will not be able to do the job correctly .
