Clio Timing Chain??

  2002 clio 1.4 16v
I have just noticed that Eurocarparts list a timing chain for the Clio at around £9.00. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it possible to change the belt to a chain?

Do they stock VW Beetle water pumps as well?

The Clio II and III engines use belts not chains. I dunno what the turbo engine in the Clio IV uses.

IIRC the 2.0 16v Clio III '140 uses the M4R which is chain driven.

The 197/200 runs the F4R not the M4R.

The GT 138 is chain driven yes as it runs the M4R

What is the difference between the two?

Completely new design - M4R is an RNA joint developed modular platform for use across the two brands (which are essentially the same chassis anyway).

The F4R is getting on a bit now but why produce two 2.0 16v units at twice the cost for everything when one saves time and money all round.

The big difference is the Nissan lump is turbo. F4R is normally aspirated and has gone about as far as it can with regards to getting performance out of it.

The market now wants turbo too.

I don't think there are any chains on the f4r engine. Belts are quieter, easier to fit but put more load on bearings and have shorter life.

As above, the oil pump is chain driven on the F4R

Yeah it will be the oil pump chain or they have just completely miss listed it and its really a bike chain or something.

You cannot run a chain on the pulleys for a belt, so to answer the other part of the question in this thread NO you cant convert even if you did get a chain the correct length.

...unless you change the pulleys!!

Including the crank pulley etc? And anyway would still be more to it that that as the tensioners are also different on a chain setup.
Its just not even vaguely feasible and certainly not for the 9 quid he was hoping for, 9,000 quid maybe!

I've always thought the worst development in the modern engine is the timing belt...I think I read somewhere that Nissan have switched back to chains.

That suggests air...it may leak...the good old chain was so reliable....or push rods with gear to gear contact!

But oneumatic would mean mappable cam profiles.

That's proper tuning p**n that is. Essentially the ultimate for an n/a 4 stroke.

You say that, but how many extremely tappy corsa C's do you see due to the chains needing replacement?? I see a lot, mainly due to poor maintenance but they can't all be!!

Yes, but at least a noisy chain is not going to mess up your engine; i have heard of some smaller-engined Clios having their belts shot at as little as 36,000 miles.

The introduction of the timing belt signalled a severe compromise on reliability; although the Ford OHC engine of the late 60s and onwards had a timing belt but did not suffer damage if the belt gave up. I wonder why they do not use this system.

How rare is it to have a belt snap?! I mean it's not very common outside of uncared for engines

  Clio RS 172 2002
Belts go snap quite often.

The PO of my car had the belt snap, ironically while it was in a non-specialist mechanic shop being serviced for aircon. It had head work and a new belt put on but the pulleys were not done. I had the whole lot changed when I got it, to be sure.

People seem to forget the service interval is also based on time as well as distance. Most of the sad stories seem to be lightly used cars that have the belts age out, but the owners only watch the odometer.

For strength and durability you really cannot compare a rubber belt with a chain.

Agreed, but for lightness, quietness, a 5 year service interval, no requirement to be oiled etc, the belt wins, so its easy to see why they get used.

Really???

Here's what a noisy chain caused.
