Cambelt and autodata

  182 BG
Hi just traded my e46 bmw in for a 182 it's had the belt and de phaser done before but will need doing again next year so I'd rather get it out the way sooner rather than later. I've had a good look through the site but can't really find the answers I'm looking for. Before anyone shoots me down I'm a fully qualified mechanic of 10 years and have lots of experience with Renault timing belts all bar the vvt engines so I know all about the floating pulleys. I'm more than willing to buy the genuine Renault tools including the cam pulley locking tool the main thing that's worrying me is all the talk of autodata being wrong with the belt instructions. Can anyone shed some light on this ?

Im not sure if you need to be a member to view them, but there are a number of threads and an article/guide or two..

I've done my first 2 a few weeks ago and getting the horse shoe to line up first time is about as easy and fingerbanging the queen.

First go took about 1 million goes as I was always a few mm out and couldn't quite get it.. 2nd time my method was better..

I think it's best to read the guide first before anything gives their 2p

Yeah I can't view them as I'm not a member yet looks like I'll be joining up and having a look. Did you use genuine tools ?

Yes the horse shoe is a must and then had the crank pin and cam pulley locking tool too.. A C spanner would have been nice.

I'm just going to take it to ren tech as they're local to me and for £475 by the time I've bought both belt kits and the locking tools I'm not going to save myself much for the amount of ball ache the job is to do. Thanks for your help though

  dan's cast offs.
think autodata is right apart from it not saying to use the pulley locking tool? could be wrong though as it's a while since i looked at it.

have you done k4m belt?

I think it says lock the cams/crank, spin the belt with the pulleys loose to equalise tension and then lock the pulleys, tighten up the pulleys, remove the tools, turn the engine a few times and refit the locking tools to check it's all in time..

It sounds sooooo easy, but doesn't happen anything like that.

If the k4m is the 1.4 or 1.6 16v then yes I have I know it similar apart from the vvt but for what the two belt kits and tools will cost and ren tech doing it for 475 I may as well save myself the grief. I got no doubts I could do it myself with the correct instructions, autodata gives 5 or 6 (can't remeber) hours to do the job so thought I'd save fair whack doing it myself. Obviously ren tech do this day in day out so they can offer good prices I'll just let them do it

I wouldn't do one for money, it takes long enough just to get to the belts.. I did mine and a friend needed his doing, so I got the tools.. I party did it to save the money, the other part was listening to every cry about how no one else on earth apart from 4 specialists can do them.. I like a challenge.

Anyone can do one, it's just a case of how long have they got.. If they can't get it spot on and start to run out of time, they'll just get it close enough..

Now I've done one, I really wouldn't trust anyone doing one in the time frame unless they know their shiit
