Big Problems!!

  Clio 1.2 16v 2001
Hope you fellas can help me out, i'm up a certain creek without a paddle :)

i've got a 1.2 16v clio, 2001 and a few months back, it started developing a bit of what I thought was a flat spot at about 3k rpm, but it got worse and worse, eventually, under heavy acceleration, the car would be really hesitant at 3k, 4k and 5k rpm, but seemed a bit smoother inbetween...

the other day I was checking everything over and couldnt find anything obvious, but it was driving OK, so decided to go put petrol in it ( morrisons, standard unleaded ) and on the way home, the car started boucing revs at just under 4.5k rpm as if it had hit the limiter, and the car then refused to rev, or accelerate, a second later it kicked back in, then 30 seconds later done it again... i managed to struggle 1/2 mile home and left the car idling, it then stalled...

it's done this twice before, both times the car has been sitting idling and has just stalled and struggled to restart for a few minutes..

now... the car starts, and runs fine from cold until the engine warms up, i've checked via OBD and the sensors show the coolant rising quickly to 83 / 84'c before it stalls, if you leave it to cool, it starts fine... right before it stalls, it shows the short term fuel trim drop to -100% meaning it's cutting the fuel, and the o2 sensors reflect this by showing 0.0000v which is understandable - but why is the ecu imposing a 100% fuel trim ?

if you start the engine when it's warm, it will only run for about 30 - 60 seconds then stall... if you try to turn the engine over, it cranks, starts up then immediately dies...

now for what i've tried...

I've tried a new coil pack - made no difference
I've swapped the upstream and downstream o2 sensors - made no difference
checked all connections i can access and appear ok
changed the plugs twice over the past month and a bit to see if it helps...
done an oil change
tried reseting the ecu by disconnecting and leaving it for a while
checked the battery - healthy voltage
checked the vacuum to the brake servo - fine
checked the vacuum to the charcoal filter - fine
checked the fuel pump for dirt - fine
checked the fuel is pumping when the engine is cranked - yep
other bits and bobs, can't remember

a few queries -

would the coolant temperature sensor have anything to do with it ? or is the coolant pump perhaps seized / failing, how could I tell ?
on the D4F engine, is there a fuel filter, my haynes manual stated somewhere there is no filter as there is no return line
is there and EGR valve on the petrol engines ? I can find references to them causing similar issues, but only on the dCi engines ? if so, is there a similar part or cause in the petrols ?

i'm really desperate to get the car back on the road, there is nothing done engine wise except a backbox and piperx induction kit

disconnecting the battery wont actually reset the ecu. take it to a renault specialist (with CLiP) and they can run a full diagnostics of the ECU, and then reinitialise it if need be.

i'd do this first before spening anymore money lol. my local charges 25quid for clip work, but renault charge around 48+vat. so its worth shopping around.

i've had it on a diagnostic machine at a local garage ( as far as the car has made it ! ) and it showed sensor faults, but mainly causedby removing sensors trying to isolate the problem... paying renault will just show the same...

i've spoken to renault this morning and they advised that the coolant temp sensor would not cause the car to stall or affect fuel trim in any way, the way to go is checking the tdc and cold start sensors...

it's been getting gradually worse, so I assume it's a mechanical fault with a sensor rather than with the ecu

when i said resetting the ecu, i didn't mean it as such, i disconnected the wiring looms, etc to try and eliminate an chance of a static build up, etc and for the internal capacitors etc to discharge, i know that the ecu is eeprom and non-volatile...

i went home last night and removed the inlet manifold, etc to get to the throttle body...

it didn't seem 'stuck' just dirty, so cleaned it up, and checked it was moving freely and replaced everything back to where it was, after this, the car refused to start and was illuminating the immobiliser, thankfully, it was just a flat battery, jump started it and left it ticking over, it ran quite rich for a short while ( strong smell of fuel from the exhaust, assume this is from cleaning up the TB )

sat and idled and then.... stalled...

i gave up for the night, at this point it was past 10:00 and was getting to dark to do anything else ( already had a sod of a time refitting the inlet manifold bolts with only torchlight )

i only got a quick look at the haynes manual but there was a segment about resetting the ecu if the TB was replaced, i assume this is because the new TB will work more effectively than a failing / damaged one... is it worth trying this after just having cleaned the TB, if anyone has the haynes at hand, could they post up the instructions, think it was something like 'switch on the ignition for 5 seconds, restart the engine, let it reach 60'c and run the car at 30mph for x amount of time'

are there any sensors i've missed that could be causing this... my dad's away to pick up a new coolant temp sensor this morning... only thing i can think is that the current one is failing and making the engine think it's at the correct operating temperature when it is in fact not.. it seemed to count up quite quick the other night, obd was set in 'F but was going up 1'F roughly every second from starting... is this normal ?

i know i should get it to renault for testing, but i'm not sure the car would make it there, it's all fast dual carriageway from where the car is to the dealer, and not an ideal place for the engine to die !!

LOL! I'd never go and replace all those parts first

always stick in on a clip and find out what computer says

saves you money in the long run
