Anyone got an inner tie rod removal tool I can borrow

  Sprint 172
I've got a crows foot machined to fit (along with a few extensions) - worked well for me. Guess where I am?

The type that slides up the arm makes it a REALLY trivial job, just slide it on and undo with a ratchet.

Worth it in the long run definately if you work on your cars a lot.

Sorry to thread hijack.

But does anyone have any brief instructions of how to change the inner tie rods? Never done it before and I've done everything else so far (with instructions) so would like to give this a go.

Is it completely impossible without special tools?

The instructions are different depending on the tools you use TBH, like for example on the slide on ones like I use you will have to remove the track rod end first, but if you are undoing it with a spanner you dont need to seeing as you will be replacing both anyway so can leave the two in one piece.

Its possible with a chopped about 32mm spanner, thats the bare minimum of specialist tools you can use.

Hmmmm, OK thanks.

I have done one of mine and will do the second for good measure today and to be honest not really that hard!!! The rubber boot as a previous comment is a bit of a git to get back on though!!!

Do mine please ;P haha

I would have said pop it over, but working like crazy at the moment (everyday for next 2 weeks) so finding it hard to even do work on my car.

If your have done work on your car its relatively easy.

Jack car up on axle stands, remove front road wheels then losen the outer tie rod nut, this can be hard to get off if not touched in years loosen with heat and WD40 if need be, then undo the outer tie rods from the hub carrier (so the rods hang) then get under car, remove and pull boot towards outside of car, then use fan spanner to undo the rods, space is tight but doable. When you unscrew the outer tie rod to remove the boot, count the amount of turns so when putting the outer tie rod back its in same place (think its about 23.5 turns, but this will vary) I would recommend getting your tracking done afterwards (or do it yourself).

One thing to note, is my inner tie rods didn't come with the plastic washers, so I reused them, these sit between the inner tie rod and steering rack, you will see them there when you undo them.

Putting the boots back on is a PITA, If yours are perished I would renew. You can buy a gator/boot insertion tool, but their pretty expensive.

A 32mm fan spanner can be had for 8 quid on ebay.
