Is my Clio 'High Mileage'? Servicing Tips?

  Clio 1.2 MkII Ph1
Hey, guys.

I'm new to the whole car world (started driving 4 months ago), and I've got a '98 Clio MkII (1st phase). I've got a service coming up - and I'm going to have a crack at it myself. However, it's recently hit 84,000 miles. I'm just wondering if this is considered 'high' mileage? I couldn't really see why it is, but there are a number of reasons for my scepticism. First of all, it came with no service history at all (I bought it at just under 79,000 miles). And when I say none, I mean literally none - it just about has its MoT certificates, and currently has an MoT on it, as of about a month ago. I'm curious as to whether I need the cambelt changing, as I'm aware that in these kinds of cars it's recommended to change it every 40,000 miles or so. I'd like to change the spark plugs, too, as it's sometimes not starting up first time. Also, it was owned by another teenager for three years before I had it, which I guess could either be a bad or good thing, as he could have done the servicing himself.

I'm going on a bit here, so I'll just cut to the chase. What do I need to service at this mileage, if I need to service it at all, and would it be worth me planning to keep the car for another few years because of the mileage?

Thanks for any help!

Thats not high mileage at all, as it has no history I would give it a good proper service all filters and oil, spark plugs maybe but not necessarily.

If you could contact the previous owner about the cambelt that would help, if he hasn't had it done you should, they will last 70k or 5 years.

Any small garage should be able to do it for you or if you want to be sure its done properly take it to either Broadspeed in Stafford or BTM in Birmingham, but for a 1.2 it doesn't matter that much.

Not sure on the start up issue, maybe ask when you get the cambelt changed.

My clio ph2 172 is on 162,500 miles... you have a way to go yet!... But yeah, I would do a good service on it anyway.

The cambelt would be a definite - especially given the fact that they are MUCH easier to replace on a 1.2 than an RS Clio. Also, like you say, you have no real history on the car.

Spark plugs would be another definite for me (as sbridgey says) and also get that gearbox oil changed.

As for the mileage - it's still a baby. ;) My 182 is closing in on 120,000 and Sir Dave's Trophy on here reached intergalactic mileage. If they have regular TLC bestowed on them, these little cars go on and on.

Sounds like you'll look after it and have just got the car in time. Best of luck with it! :) Oh, and another shout for Fred at BTM - literally spitting distance from you.

Your car is probably worth 4-500 quid, I personally wouldnt worry about the cambelt.

get the belt done I would! peace of mind then

I brought mine with no service history and I do it all myself now so its all good !

Get the belt done ! Some people baffle me yours car only worth £500, so the obvious thing to do is not look after it and go buy another car that could be a nail!

My 182 is on 102k at as long as they are serviced most cars no matter what will do good mileage !

Cambelts on 1.2s are easy and most garages can carry it out , but the specialists can also carry it out for you mate !

Each car should do on average 12-18k miles a year the manufacture states , so average miles for your year should be circa 180k lol so I wouldn't class it as high mileage no!

You're an idiot. The cambelt is around £200 on them.

Why am I an idiot? am I not allowed an opinion? I dont see the point in spending so much on a nearly 15 year old clio. If the guy wants to then thats his choice.

Telling someone not do do an important service item is frankly retarded.

If he took your advice he would most probably end up stranded alongside the M6 with no way to get to work.

Good one.

I am all for servicing cars but there must come a point when the costs of servicing/maintenance out weighs the cars value, unless it has some sentimental value.

Just my personal opinion like I say, and I never said dont change it.

Start up problem would more than likely be the tdc sensor and loom fault, easy to do 15 minute job.

cam belt on one of Them is such a simple job, any independent garage could do it, I would recommend getting the water pump changed too incase that goes after you replace the belt you have to pay for the same job again.

just be aware you might have to spend a few bits in the service if you have no history of what's been done, mainly water and tear items, common things back box mount rubber splits, anti roll bar bushes they perish and can split even seen some without them there just the anti roll bar knocking away, rear springs but they are all simple jobs that aren't labour intensive
