BIGASH/FF-Racing X85 Clio Cup Racer Project

Of course there's more than my opinion - an unquailfied one at that, as I stated in my edit. I haven't sound either so will listen later.

But my point was with or with out the oil he would've hit, as going tadge fast so run out of brakes - as you say. Going for the over take wasn't in my mind. I'll watch later with sound.

i don't think he would've, but its done now, que 10 pages of debate LOL

hi my name is Fred, my company has the big sticker on the side of your car, i've already told you 3 times i'll do it, but you want to be let down elsewhere AGAIN.....

Ooooh I take it you could fit my quaife as well then. That means I can just bring you my engine and gearbox this winter and let you do the lot!
Good sales pitch! haha

You can hear the tyres skidding well before they collide. Looks to me like a very unfortunate accident. James goes wide so he doesn't rear end Tony but then with no braking power just runs out of room as Tony is turning in.

Glad its not just me that sees it that way, didnt want to come across as biased cause James is a mate!

How I see it though (and not with any rose tinted specs on or anything, just being honest) is VERY different to what Pete is describing TBH where he is making it sound like James deliberately went for a gap that didnt exist with utterly no chance of making it even if his brakes werent suffering due to his pass side being covered in gear oil.
(which I can assure you it would have been, as when I took the engine out with him I was nice and clean undoing drivers side shaft and uniball etc, but the pass side one just had gearbox oil every everything and went all over my hands as I was doing it)

To me its just a case of:
go for brakes,
brakes not there due to gear oil,
swerve to avoid car in front,
carry on braking to try and give car in front enough space to turn in,
not enough brakes,
nowhere to go (laws of physics wont let you go inside at that speed, car on outside) so no choice but to hit car in front

Just watched your vid, was going well until the pass on Tony, smiled when I read your disclamer at the end of your vid. I'm sure you wouldv'e out braked yourself oil or no oil, Tony was always going for the apex - you knew this I take it? I did notice the massive gains you were getting on Tony under braking on almost all corners so perhaps a late lunge wasn't required?

Seems you want to get results all the time (which is no bad thing) - and which I know is not always possible and patience always pays off I find.

Still - damage is damage and sounds like you've a fair bit to get sorted and get it ready in time for Donington, hope to see you there.

Just re read this and it sounds a bit patronising - not meant to be, I know I wasn't in either car or there, just my opinion from what I've seen on your video.
Yes thanks Pete the car had good potential without the 3rd and then 4th gear issue. Not a disclaimer just so people who don't read the forum and facebook can understand what actually happened.

I respect your opinion but don't agree with you myself, Thankfully I have the data which shows me going slower through Island than on the previous lap and also braking earlier, I was caught out by just how early Tony was breaking and as soon as I went for the brakes they locked. I tried my best to cadence brake and then to chuck it into the corner (hence running onto the grass) but I just wasn't going to stop in time. In hindsight maybe when I lost 3rd gear syncro and then 4th gear (Resulting in not being able to engine brake) I should of pitted and called it a day but I thought it was just the syncro had gone and I could limp to the end and get my signature (Final one for the novice cross :)) Unfortunately it was actually the gearbox cracked in two places and as Chip says the gear oil was everywhere and over 1 litre was missing from the box when it was drained.

As I said to Tony after at no point was I attempting to pass him there it was all an attempt at avoiding an accident and then damage limitation, I was planning a run on the exit of the first corner on the following lap but obviously we didn't get to that point.

I was and still am completely gutted at crashing into Tony he was completely innocent and I got straight out of the car and went to apologise. I also offered to pay for the repairs as there is no doubt it was my/my cars fault and I wasn't happy that he should have to pay. I have done my best to heal the situation and that is all I can do. Obviously these things can happen when racing and we all know the risks.

Great sportsmanship there!

Ah OK, cheers for explaining. Agree for you not pittting guess I would held station\off from the back of other cars knowing that I've got less braking effort (this is me and not passing judgement or anything). And as you say it's a risky sport we all know the risks - good and bad.

Yes in hindsight I do agree with you Pete and that was an oversight on my part getting so close on the way into a braking/gearchange zone but I can't say I was expecting that lap to be any different to the previous ones :(
though I wouldn't let a friendship put me off having a view or asking questions.
Too right :)

The colour of Tonys doors makes me laugh everytime I look at them! :)
Good shunt that! I hope you're both out at Donny :)
I have just been speaking with Fred and all is set for the gearbox and also now he wants to fix up the engine too so looks like all is set :) Just got to do the shell on Friday and it should be okay and ready! Spoke with Tony earlier and he's doing Donington so yes should be another good bunch of clios out just a shame Ian can't make it!

Just watched the video - OUCH.
Have to ask though why did you carry on to the end of the race? Did you think it was just a lock up rather than an oil leak?

Says it here Phil.

No yeah I read that - what I was wondering was it seemed to lock up a few times then badly and hit Tony. At that point I think I would have called it a day as either the brakes were having issues or there was oil on the tyres. Seems a bit weird carrying on for the rest of the race and at a fair pace too

You pay to race. You race.

It is all well and good everyone doing the old 'post mortem', but racing can involve contact. Luckily it is irregular, but its a risk you take. One of the reasons I can't afford to race this year is I can't afford to keep replacing bits and bobs. And i'm not experienced enough. Nowhere near.

No one was seriously hurt. James has said sorry to Tony, and that is that. I know its frustrating for Tony and I sympathise, but he'd be the first to say 's**t happens'. Move on to Donny.

No no - I give up LOL

I'm not saying I would have retired because I hit someone else - but it seems like the car was skidding a lot under breaking before and after the accident. I just wondered why James didn't just head back to the pits as something seemed wrong with the car. I was just wondering if at the time he thought it was just the brakes locking up rather than a mechanical failure.

Doesn't matter lol

And that's cheating, getting the engine done.
I know sorry just seems silly while the engine is out and Fred is happy to sort it out in time! Might even have a winter where I don't have to touch the car now :)

After the incident I didn't plan on carrying on hence waving the green car through and then a Russ coming through as I thought the car would be goosed but it was drivable. You say at quite a pace but I was nearly 5 seconds off the pace of what the car would do and that a hell of a lot to say that a cool down lap is only about 10-15 seconds slower than a normal lap.

At the time and for quite a while after the race I just put it down to a lockup from lack of engine braking but upon seeing all the gear oil everywhere, then the data and the rear view camera showing just the one wheel locked up that confirmed it was more than just the lack of engine braking.

Well summed up buddy :)

If it was a trackday I would have gone home early, if it was a race I would have carried on, Im sure thats true of everyone else too TBH so seems a bit pointless having an inquest, lol.

Good news about fred sorting the engine, will be interesting to see if its just poor ring seal or if a ringland has broken up, with how sudden you described it I woudl say it sounds like the piston broken but you cant really tell till its in bits!

LOL I really wasn't trying to accuse anyone of anything I understand racing is racing - it's just on the videos that same tyre locks up on most corners so I'd just wondered why it hadn't triggered a "something is wrong with my car" reaction. But yeah now James has replied I can totally understand - gearbox issues not allowing engine braking, massive 6 pot brakes, I think everyone would assume it was just brake lockup.

Hopefully all be sorted again soon. It's interesting that the gearbox cracked twice after having the LSD fitted - bit of a worry
