Standard 182 What would you spend it on ??

Sell it and use the extra money to buy a cup packed one.

If keeping it though, first thing would be all new suspension bushes and joints etc to get it back to what they are meant to be like.

Whiteline RARB, Xenons (if it doesn't have them) etc etc.

Wouldn't bother with anything engine wise if that is what you are looking for - IMO of course.

Agreed on the engine, other than maintainance and a remap, oh and if it needs a belt then fit some 197 cams.

Remap, Exhaust & Panel if I could get that for less than a G.

I wouldn't waste it on a car.

And I've fixed the title for you.

Are 197 cams alot better than 182's ?? im guessing thats where the extra tiny bit of power comes from ??

Yep. When I changed the lower arms, track rod ends, ect the car felt much tighter. Massive change, but then again my ball joints were fucked.

Give it a service and enjoy.

Yeah they are a fair amount hotter, really helps at the top of the rev range, the 197 also has higher compression which helps too, and bigger inlet ports.

Do they need to be mapped to suit the 182 ??

Yes, and timed in appropriately too, which TBH only Mike from MWM seems to offer at the moment, so makes sense getting him to do the belts/cams/mapping all in one go, which would be about 1K including the cost of buying the cams.

I wouldn't. Instead my money would go on:

Petrol.
Trackdays.
Tuition.

Save the rest for when something goes wrong, which it will.

Mike does sometimes work Mobile, so worth dropping him a line with plenty of notice when you need the belts doing and you might find he can come to you.
At least then it would only need to go to him for a day for the actual mapping rather than him needing it for a couple of days, so you could do it in a day trip.

Stand alone to map the thing properly and use the change to rip engine open and pop the forged rods in with new bearings and gaskets etc.

TBH although I am a massive fan of standalone management, the standard setup actually copes just fine for moderate levels of tune so its wasted money getting rid of it unless its going to be a long term project which evolves a lot further over time, and the standard rods are well and truely happy at 7800rpm+ (with ARP) and 200bhp+, so no point swapping them either.

nail and head, this is the evolution, its happening right now and your all invited ;)

i'm talking about my mk1 el chippio, 16psi turbo F7P @ 280 odd bhp on a dodgy fastchip map ;)

Ah, yes for you it makes perfect sense mate.

Like with Daniels F4R mk1 that me and Mike got running for him last weekend, I insisted on going stand alone as I know he want to go forced induction later on so utterly pointless wasting time with the standard management really.

Same with my Phase 1, when Mike originally built that he went straight for aftermarket rather than try and get it working on the standard ECU knowing it would always be compromised.

Are these better cams than the 438's?

Danny will fit 438's, belt change and map for 1200.

I do agree, mine runs and drives lovely but the delivery is a little.....interesting shall we say, all or nothing pretty much, the engine is capable of so much more so I would like stand alone to exploit that fact, especially now i'm getting into track more and more, it was all well and good for stomping up santa pod for giggles, but its not quite so useable on the twisties without seriously paying attention! :)

No they arent better than the 438s. Just a lot cheaper, its circa 500 quid for 438 cams IIRC and about 80 quid secondhand for 197.

So the 197 are cheap enough that there kind of isnt any point not getting a set if you are going to have belts done and a map anyway, where as the 438 are a fair bit of extra money. I'd imagine that price you are quoting is for a cup which are cheaper to do the belts on? If not though it sounds like a good price to me for 438 fitted and mapped to a non cup.

Danny's prices are very competitive as far as I know for belt changes etc so its not far off the money for a none cup i'd say

Think Mike is about 700 ish for belts and a remap, so they seem to be in the same ballpark TBH
When I was saying it would be about 1K all in I was including fuel driving to and from, an oil and filter change etc as well (ie all the things you need to do too really) so apologies to Mike if I made him look more expensive than he is.

  Whichever has fuel
182Tev. you need a dephaser from memory? So that's £600 of your budget gone!

Oh one thing worth a mention if you just want to make the car seem quicker and hence more fun to drive, is the new ktec induction kit, like any induction kit dont expect significant power gains but the sound from it is epic which is good fun :)

I have an open IK on the 172, does sound absolutely epic on full chat, particularly as you rock onto cam at the 5-5.5 grand mark :)

Yeah i do need a dephaser, just been quoted £538 from ktec for full cam/aux tensioners and dephaser.

The belts were all done it 2010 and it hasnt done many miles since then so im tempted to just have the dephaser done on its own to save a bit of money..

I really wouldnt recomend refitting a secondhand cambelt thats 2 years old already!

Whats wrong with a belt thats done the maximum of 10000 miles ?? Does the aux belt come off when the cambelt is done or are they seperate ??

To do the dephaser, the whole lot needs to come off, so for the sake of the price of the parts you may as well have new ones.
