172 or 182?

  Mk5 Golf Gti
Hi Guys,

As a couple of you may know im looking to buy a Clio Sport within the next couple of months, but before I do i want to do as much background research as possible (having never owned one before) :)

Is there really that much difference between the 172 and the 182, other than the obvious exhaust differences?

172's seem to be incredibly cheap in comparison to 182's!

Thank you in advance!

Joe

Very little difference other than the option of cup packs on the 182. Just buy the nicest of either that you find. If you're going to modify it at all the suspension probably won't matter.

My hear is pretty set on a 182 but there doesn't seem to be any difference between the two, i think it appeals a little bit more..

I agree they look a touch better from the back but you can always put a recessed exhaust on the 172 for a good looking single pipe. I have one of each and after that I just wouldn't be bothered about which it was if I bought another.

It's personal preference though.

When I first bought one I wanted a 182 because I thought they would be better, then instantly regretted not spending half the money on a 172 which are exactly the same! In other words a 172 is the better pick for me :)

As said above, just go with the nicest one your budget can afford. I ended up with an early Ph2 172 and it drives nicer than some of the 182s I had driven. :) Also its worth noting there are differences to the shell... The 182 has no spare wheel well, and that means it can have the center exit twin exhaust, the 172 cant due to the big old wheel well under the boot floor! As mentioned, the 182 cup suspension is different to the 172 stuff and cant be fitted to any other model with out modifications being made due to different bolt spacing as well, so if you get a 172 or basic 182, the 172 cup dampers will fit, but not the 182 cup ones if you get me! Other than that...nothing really note worthy. 2003 onward modles of both had cruise control fitted, I regret not getting one of these! :(

Get the nicest one for your budget, be it a 172 or 182. How much do you want to spend,

I've got a 182 now but if I was buying again I would probably get a 172, purely because it's basically the same car but half the price.

I think more so on the 172 although I don't really read that many issues with that problem, I appreciate it does happen though. I'm strongly considering selling my current car and will be wanting to spend upto a couple of grand, which IMO is decent 172 level

I bought a 182 yesterday and the only reason i chose that over a 172 is that i like the look of the exhaust on the back better.

^^ because cup!

I went base model 172... Cleanest my budget could get me! I do wish I had got one with the cup style pack, that splitter and spoiler! <3

Some interesting feedback, thanks lads! I Currently have a mini cooper which is actually sold, someone put a deposit down on it yesterday! So my budget will be £3,500 for the clio :) What do you reckon i could get with that budget, a tidy example?

I was in your position and bought a 182. Although I didn't have a budget as good as yours. If I was doing it again I'd buy a 172, cup if you're not fussed about AC or a standard one if you are. Spend the money you save on making sure it's had it's belts, refresh the suspension/coilovers, wheels, retrim of the steering wheel, or a new sablet one etc., good tyres, track days and petrol (all of which you will probably want to do at somepoint maybe)

I also quite liked the idea of the exhaust on the 182  but in hindsight i prefer the cleaner look of the phase 2 172's. Most people (ie friends/family/work colleagues) think the twin exhaust is mega chav. I do have a yozza though so that doesn't help.

I mean ideally, i want to be able to just buy it and be able to drive it away! I dont mind having to get the belts done because at least i know where they have been done.. Aslong as i got something off the price!

A recessed 172 exhaust looks the best Imo, sporty but not OTT :)

I wanted silver sp got a 172 cos 172 silver looks better than 182 silver. In my opinion, of course.

Makes me want to change the tip on mine and get a 182 surround!

I wouldn't run one without the 182 surround. The surround makes it look OEM and factory finished. :) I would be happier with a smaller tip, say 3" because the 3.5" is a bit on the chav side but not enough for me to spend another £500 on another system!! Haha.
