Williams - Likely to appreciate in value?

As per the title, i have been looking at Williams for a little while now (i have been looking at a lot of things if im honest) and having seen a couple in the flesh, think they look absolutely cracking.

Clearly buying an unmolested example with the exception of a upgraded exhaust etc would be favourable, but what are peoples thoughts on the value of these in years to come?

Also (because I dont know them too well), which is the "one to have" out of the 1, 2 and 3.

1 2 or 3 wont really matter, all have different benefits. The ones that will raise in value will be the low owner / milage ones. 3 owners or less. Very difficult to find, majority of those on market are 8+ owners, closer to 10, sell for around the 1.5k 2k mark.

Thanks for the info Saner. Any thoughts on price range.... lets say for example 100k miles, FSH, HPI clear, very tidy throughout with 5 previous owners: 2k mark? I have seen some for well over 3k, and others for less than 2k.... seems there are some real dogs out there too.

If you want one, just do the same you would with any car. Try and find the best one you can.

If you got a one owner, 10k miles, no rust, perfect stickered, never crashed Williams1, then yeah, it might not lose any money, maybe even creep up in value as the tatty ones die off. But otherwise I don't think there's much hope of it going up.

Buy one. Enjoy it.

good way to look at it. I know its not a lot of money to spend on a little hobby but its just nice to know what value these will hold, if any. Something about them just looks way better than any other 1*2. Iv owned a number of 1*2 and a 230 V6 which i loved (although massively impractical), but the williams is still on my hit list. I just dont want to be dissapointed

He bought a slightly not perfect one and tried to make it so and it cost him an absolute fortune.

Looking minimum 3k for a half decent one now. Mint one 4k, mint low miles 5k. So few about now prices have gone up a reasonable amount.

2k is the starting point I'd say.

My first 3 in 2005 cost me 4k for 77k and 4 previous owners. My 1 cost me 3k for 119k and more owners in 2011.... I got a reasonable price for my 1 - body work is immaculate but engine is a bit tired, but planning on putting in a ph1 engine sometime after our new house purchase goes through.

Of late I have seen all models go for what I'd call a lot (more than 4k)

Echo above really, you will be paying for anything that will defiantly appreciate, hold its value.

Better to find one that is in good nice, so you can enjoy it and then move on.

I've been looking at the bottom - middle of the market over the past few months and have to say you should be spending at least 2.5k if you want something that doesn't have any horror stories, then up for reduced miles and owners.

Try williamsclio - www.williamsclio.co.uk - many of the same ppl on here on it, bit more specialised for the Williams.

Have a look at loads and loads. Look at even the dogs if they're close IMO - see how each drives, the rust etc. if you're patient you'll get a good one easily, just have to realise they're not like 182s - good ones don't come up all the time and each seems very individual.

I remember back in the late 90's I was offered a nice, 3 door Sierra Cosworth, sensible modifications and about 65k - £3850. If I had kept it till now I could have made my money back about 8 times over lol.

Problem is, the Williams is in what Id call an interm period - they have become classics, but they are not quite old enough for every one to be valuble. Obviously, the mint low miles standard examples will alway be worth the most, and one day once they are a little older, the sensibly modified examples will be worth money too, but IMO that won't be for a good 8-10 years yet.

If you had some spare money and enough enclosed space to be able to store them properly, and you were prepared to hold onto it for a long time AND be prepared not to drive it much and keep up all maintinance then yes, IMO they will go up in value.

Though I cannot see a time where they are worth a super fortune, not for many many years

The difference is Clios don't have the same following as fast Fords, so a Williams will (probably) never increase in value like a Cossie.

As Revels said, buy the car to enjoy it, not to treat it as an investment.

I got mine (Williams 2 80k) from Russ on here and to be honest i'm not worried about making a profit just want the satisfaction of restoring it as i wont be getting rid of it so if it goes up in value thats just a bonus.

I think if you buy a collectors example (ie mega low miles and totally mint) and then dont use it, it will probably go up in value, but if you are planning on actually driving it about then I would say just buy one and enjoy it and dont expect it to ever be worth loads.

If you want to wrap it in cotton wool then yeah it may be worth a bit maybe not

If you want to drive it then it will be a money pit for sure.

But if you want that style Clio to drive then buy a 16v maybe

Surprised to actually read something that seems well researched and realistic on an owners club site rather than "these cars are all future classics buy now or regret not doing so they will all be worth millions" which is the standard issue club response from most car clubs of a specific car as they are too blinded by their own enthusiasm!

I can't see the Williams' becoming appreciating collectables unless you have a near zero mileage museum piece. Great cars, but the following is too small.

Same goes for the 182 Trophy IMO. They're never going to have as much appeal as say, a Racing Puma (nearest comparison I can think of).
