Traction Control question

  BMW 330D
Probably a stupid question but how does traction control work, is it done with sensors that relay to the ecu or does it have its own computer?

It's ESP for a start.

Think it's something to do with the wheel speed sensors. I would have though it had it's own unit onboard somewhere.

ESP and ABS share an ECU. It's mounted on the hydroblock in the engine bay (passenger side bulkhead area). Sensors are wheel speed, steering angle, yaw sensor, brake pedal switch etc. ESP ECU is linked to the engine ECU to decrease throttle opening angle and vary spark advance.

is the esp and abs ecu the bsi unit?

No, that's the UCH. UCH is a gateway and ECU for various electric systems (window motors, wiper etc.). Then you have ECUs for the engine management, ABS or ABS and ESP, Airbag etc.

But a traction control light being on could be the bsi unit?
