  car? need a license 1st!
Some of you may know, some of you may not know! but this time last year I was in court for Dangerous Driving, resulting in a 12 month ban that came into effect on the 22nd May 2006.

It's 2007 no, and not long till I can take my test again (yeah the f*****s are making me do an extended retest!!!! 70 mins), the problem being getting a motor, running it.. and most of all insuring it.

Anyone that has been banned will know that the insurance costs are stupid once you've got DD40 on your license. I did a couple of tester quotes online earlier this week..

21yo
0 NCB
1.2 RL 97 Clio
DD40

£1103.64 <-- Thats more than I was paying when I first started driving at 17!!! but considering I've been banned, I don't think thats too bad - also thats an online quote and you can barter with companies over the phone.. I reckon i can get it down to around the 1k mark.

You may be wondering why I posted this in Clio discussion.. well here's why:

My insurance problems aren't going to let me own a 172 (which I would have had by now if it wasn't for the pigs). All my friends are running around in similar powered cars, and I won't be able to handle being in a 1.2 when they are all flying past me. (Saxo VTR, Nova GSi). Anyway to the point:

I've been planning a project, seeing as I'm not going to insure a 172, but want to go 172 speed. Buy a nice cond. Mk1 Ph3 (my fave shape) 1.2 clio.. strip the badboy out, and put some bucket seats/harnesses/steering wheel in. I want one in white, with black bumpers so I can put some Supealeggera's on and spray them black (how do you think that will look??). Anyway in the pipeline I'm thinking of pulling the 1200 lump out, and upgrading the brakes/sus/steering and dropping either a valver or a willy lump in the front. That way I'll be able to keep up with the boys ;)

Anyways, it's only an idea at the moment, and I just wanted some opinions.

Discussion welcome :) thanks in advance

Nice to see that you have grown up after getting the ban.

You are in the wrong crowed if all you want is to keep up with them and not look a prick.

You got banned for a reason, learn from it.

There is no way any insurance company would insure you after you have modded the car. You would be best to save up and get a track day car to have fun with.

Sorry if the post seems harsh.

Steve

This has to get an award for one of the dumbest threads of all time!! Can a mod change the subject to: "I got banned for dangerous driving and now I want to get banned again for driving without insurance by modding my car and not declaring it to the insurance company...."

You need to think your posts through before clicking submit. You don't get "learnt" things, you get taught them. Are you as thick as your typing suggests?

Thanks to everyone else who's made a sensible contribution.

Steve: Your post doesn't seem harsh, it seems like the truth, and thats what I wanted.. Honest opinions, not "you're a dumb s**t".

  car? need a license 1st!
I don't think £1103 is too bad considering!

Thats what I thought Deb, to say I was paying 1k when I was 17.. on a 1.2 nova. Going up by £100 doesn't seem harsh to say I've got DD40.

For all those that are interested. I shall tell you how I got banned. Before I do I would just like to say, this is for your information only. I'm NOT bragging about this, in fact I'm extremely gutted and have learnt my lesson.

I was exiting my local town, the road goes from a 30 limit to a 40 limit. A "friend" of mine came flying past doing around 60/70 on the opposite side of a traffic island. Stupidly for me, I decided to chase him.

Just over the brow of a hill is a flat straight part of the road, around 300 yards long. I was about 3ft off his back bumper as we overtook a line of 3 cars at speeds reaching 70mph. Unfortunately for us one of the cars in that line of traffic happened to be an off-duty piggy. He radio'd ahead and told his piggy friend we were heading his direction. They finally caught up with us on a mcdonalds car park, where he proceeded to tell me I was an idiot (agreed), i'm a bad driver (disagree) and that I'd better start getting used to the bus (well that bit is obvious).

The trouble you're gonna have mate is that if you declare a valver/williams engine swap to the insurers you might as well get a 172 coz its unfortunately gonna hit your wallet as hard. :(

If you want my advice, go for a 1.2 or 1.4 at a push, modify it styling wise to the level you want. You may find things like wheels/exhaust don't push up your premium and just put up with having a slower car until you insurance comes down a bit.

Just my thoughts though.

*Edit* - Bit of a bugger about the silly driving but sounds like you know better so I'd say good luck with the new project and play it safer this time.

Steve:

I have learnt my lesson. I can guarentee that I won't be driving stupidly fast on public roads ever again. If you wanna drive fast, take it to a track!

I like the idea of a track car? Just have a 1.2 to runaround in for a year or so until I can get some NCB built up.

I've also looking into doing IAM exam which can help with insurance and will teach me some valueble lessons about how to handle a car on the road.

IAM - Institute of Advanced Motoring (in case anyone didn't know ;))

Did i mention not telling insurance? I'm sorry but you make my out to be a right c**t, and I'm not.

If you intend to declare the modifications then this isn't the dumbest post, just the most pointless based on the premise that if the quote on a factory built 172 is too high then why would an insurance company quote you less on an home made '172'!?!?

Thats what I was afraid of.. Telling the insurance that I've got a 2.0 engine in my car isn't wise..

I suppose if I've waited a year to get my license back, another couple of years of driving aren't going to take long.

Thanks for the comments Alex :)

You've got a point, but there was no need to be so stuck up about it. Next time just say that nicely in the first place.

BTW - I got quoted near enough 8.5k on a 172 :(

A year of no driving will probably be a lot more agonising than having to drive a 1.2 or similar. At least you can have a decent car and style it nicely in the mean time.

Besides you've got years ahead of being able to buy faster cars, just gotta hold out for em.

Its quite funny they picked you up in McDonalds car park!

Well see the thing is, the piggy that caught us didn't even see the incident, he was already on maccy's and heard the radio transmission and caught us as we came in. It's too late to worry about this now, but it pisses me off knowing he didn't see anything and just latched onto it.

This guy is a complete prick and has nothing better to do.. In fact all the piggys around me are the same.. They gave my brother 3 points and a £30 fine for not having a handbrake.. I know this is illegal, but christ have they got anything better to do?!

w*****s.

As Alex said, after declaring mods such as a 2.0 engine, you may aswell just have the 172 in the first place really. It's not going to look to good from an insurers point of view, to get banned for speeding, then put a big engine into a 1.2 as soon as you're back on the road.

Why do people call the police 'pigs'? Police Officers work very hard in an increasingly restrictive environment to catch criminals often in the full knowledge that this country's pathetic justice system will have them back on the streets ASAP.

The get attacked, spat on, shouted at and generally abused as part of the everyday work and the thanks they get is the people they are trying to protect calling them 'filth' and 'pigs'!

I've been pulled over for speeding twice and both times the officers were reasonable, friendly people.

Just remember if things had gone slightly differently in your race the 'piggy' who booked you could have been the person who had to tell your family that you were never going to see them again!

Yeah, well it was like 30% of each, 30% my mate, 30% me, 30% coppers..

I would never think of running a car with mods undeclared.. Perhaps you could have got away with it 10/15 years ago, but now.. not a chance.

I call them pigs, because thats what they are. Yes, I agree you do get the occasional nice copper - I've been pulled by them before and I don't mind talking to them because they're plesant.

If you lived near me you'd realise what a complete set of tossers my police force is..

w**kers.

Yup, there job is to go round finding people like that and giving them fines to ensure they get it repaired or another fine will be happening.

Imagine if the car rolled down the hill into someone, or someones house..because it was left out of gear...

Point well taken, and I'd already thought about this. I just wanted to see what other people thought and it seems most of you agree :)

I wouldn't mind waiting a couple of years to get a 172, its not like they're all going to die soon?? :p

Most insurance companies want to know about any convictions in the last 5 years....

Yeah I know that, it can differ between companies thought - the ban stays on my license for 10 years iirc??

But I'm thinking that with IAM qual and 2years NCB, insurance companies will be a little lenient when it comes to quoting.. having proved i've learned my lesson and that.

I can understand why the police get called 'the pigs' by some. I think its unacceptable to spit at/verbally or physically abuse em etc.

But sometimes they can be annoying. I've been pulled over for a couple of minor things and more often than not you get completely patronised which winds me up. I can understand why the police aren't everyones favourites.

Chewy fella I've had a DD40 when I was young & stupid....I was told I would have to do an extended test but when it came round I just did the normal one...weird! Upon geting my licence back I got a 1.3 mk5 escort insured for 1300....then went from saxo vtr to williams 2.

Yeah they can get annoying pulling you for silly things, but it is thier job! I would never spit at one or verbally abuse them. At the end of the day, they do more than just pull motorists up.

Yeah I got told I had to do extended test.. Do you think I'll be able to get away with doing a normal one? How come you did?

I think a 1.2 clio -> somthing a little faster -> William/172 is a good way of going about it :)

Can a mod please move this into general chat?? :p

I don't know! anybody Googling for "the dumbest thing ever written" will find this so indirectly he's put this thread on the world map!

Bit off topic, but how could they prove you were driving dangerously, if only one copper saw you surely that isn't enough to secure a conviction?

Well see here's the thing.. all this could have been avoided..

but i went down for a "chat" as he descibed it, which turned into a taped interview.. which i took without a solicitor.. A very very stupid move on my part and probably 80% of the reason why I actually got banned.

I could go onto talk about how these coppers basically framed me.. but then again I was driving stupid (definately not dangerously) so I've only got myself to blame. Plus if I did, I'd get flamed even more :p

if you want a fast car you have not learnt a lesson because you will end up doing the same thing again if you get a 1.2 you will be going a lot slower, and will not be doing so many stupid things.
