Sump Gasket Changed - Leaking more then before

Hey Guys

Wondering if anyone has any ideas why my local mechanic has made my oil leak worse after changing the sump gasket.

History - 12 months ago car had hair line crack in sump. I changed sumps and re used sump gasket, leaked a lil bit for the last 12 months

Recently - Had Rear Main changed with gear box swap as was slight leak.

Recently - Still have leak so mechanic fitted new genuine sump gasket (cost 4 hours labor + $50 for gasket)

Problem - Still leaking, now worse then before, mechanic assures me its not the rear main and doesnt really want to warranty his work stating it aint rocket science and even offered me my money back and to go else where.

I just want it fixed and feel I shouldnt have to cough up more money.

He thinks the sump may be warped?? any one ever heard of such a thing ?

the leak is clearly coming from where the gearbox meets the engine, he said when the sump was off he could see the fly wheel and it was nice and dry. it also did look like the seal along the rear of the sump (against firewall) was a tiny bit damp

When fitting a sump gasket one small bit of oil or grease between the sump and gasket it will blow you need to have the block part and sump lip 100% clean or the min you put your foot down it will blow oil out

Take the money back and do it yourself.

Make sure you have a good go at cleaning any silicon out of the oil pickup though, its pretty much inevitable a little ends up in there if you use it sealing the sump and obviously if you keep redoing it again and again then it builds up and can eventually cause a problem.

4hours labour! we charge 1.5 plus oil + filter + gasket, did he go to the pub halfway through?

there's a set procedure in torquing up the bolts

This is why i wont let anyone other than a specialist on here touch my car. My local mech gets all the mainstream sort of work i.e brake pads, shocks, etc etc

Hey ozclio03, I assume that wasn't at one of the 3 main Renault specialists in Melbourne (Alpine Affaire, Virage, AutoParis)? I struggle to think they'd charge you 4hrs labour for that...

Of course not, wouldn't surprise me on the time quote as one of those 3 quoted 1.5+ days to simply change a gearbox.

happy ending..... I went to Fiji for 2 weeks and left the car with my mechanic. He took the sump off and resealed it, it still leaked.... he bit the bullet and removed the gear box and fly wheel. Noticed the rear main was the issue (which he changed with non gen item) he purchased genuine item from Renault, installed drove around for a while. Problem solved - was the non genuine rear main which he purchased.

He has then offered to give me money back for the labor and parts for the recent sump gasket change as he admits it was never the problem.. I declined his offer as it has already cost him a lot to remove and refit the gearbox a second time free of charge.

Just goes to show if you kick up a stink and also ask about a warranty before a job is started it will pay off in the long run.

He is currently putting in a claim with the company that supplied the after market rear main as he is under the impression it is faulty.
