Stud Conversion Kits

  Clio 182 FF
I'm looking into wheel stud conversion kits. Top two round here seem to be the Pure Motorsport kit and the K-Tec kit (available in two lengths).

Both kits look pretty similar to me, apart from PMS using an allen key to fit the studs, and K-Tec studs being M12x1.5mm stepping-down to M12x1.25mm whereas PMS stays at M12x1.5mm for the whole thing.
I know some people will have brand loyalty to either (PMS probably ahead of K-Tec in my case, but lets not start a slagging match), is one kit really better than the other?

And then about the length…

PMS kit: 75mm - allowing for upto 12mm spacers.
K-Tec kit: 68mm - no spacers
K-Tec kit: 100mm - allowing for big spacers (but surely if using big spacers you'd be using bolt-to-hub instead of bolt through!?)

If you've the PMS kit, but aren't running spacers, are the studs going to poke through the wheel looking ugly and possibly stop you fitting wheel centre caps if you're running the stock wheels?

You won't be able to run standard 172/182 wheels with the PMS kit wiyh no spacers. You also need a longer socket too especially for the rears.

But I'm veey pleased with my PMS kit.

  Many.
If you know exactly what you want, it'll be cheaper to buy it from the likes of Rally Design. You just need to know thread size etc, and lengh, plus the style of nuts/angle you need/want.

K-Tec kit is very reasonably priced tbh, I have two sets of PMS studs on my cars and had no issues, one with 10mm spacers all round and one without.

You wouldn't fit Motorsport studs with standard wheels really as it defeats the purpose for me, I would just buy cheap studs in that case, the main benefit is wheel swap speeds and being harder to cross threads with the bullet tips.

Another option for you is Turner Motorsport studs which is an American BMW specialist and do the same studs as PMS but in various lengths.

Out of those three they're the best studs you can buy really so depends what spacer size you want on which you choose.

i got the ktec ones, they've been on for around 2 weeks now and can't fault them. i'm running 10mm spacers on the rear soon to have 10mm on the fronts as well.

Thanks for the input guys :).

I'm perfectly happy with "just keep the spacers on all the time". Probably going to be running 10mm.

Thanks, I'd guessed it would probably need a decent length socket to fit down. The pricing of the K-Tec kit is… surprisingly reasonable (must be an error! :p). I don't want to get some cheapies (because safety), and getting a kit from one of the trusted traders means I can't arse it up and order the wrong stuff!

Yep, I know that standard wheels aren't the lightest thing for track use (and 16" tyres aren't cheap) but I've got multiple sets of rims, and as the dark cup wheels are the best looking IMHO against the black car they'll do for road use :).

@matt91: Did you choose the long ones to work with the spacers?

Personally, I can not see the point in changing from the 1.5mm pitch thread down to a 1.25 pitch thread.

of the two, I'd much rather go with the PMS kit.

for the record, I run another brand stud made by a local company to myself, had a set on the misses 182 for aprox 2 years before we sold it, it had a combined use of road and occasional trackdays, all with no problems.
on the Trophy we have used them again, this one purely a track going car and again with no problems.

i run an 80mm stud.

Morgan, have you bought from turner before. Good prices for their stuff.

No as I haven't managed to find a UK dealer or had the need for the longer studs yet, by the time you put delivery from US and tax they are PMS money.

Just saw that on the PMS site they list the dimensions of their studs. They're: 12mm inner thread (hub) + 10mm shank + 42mm outer thread (wheel nut) + 11mm bullet tip = 75mm total. So minus the 12mm that's screwed into the hub and you've got 63mm of stud left.

Out of interest I went to the garage and grabbed one of the spare 182 Cup anthracite wheels from the collection. There's 54mm gap through the holes from the hub mounting face to the inside of the centre cap.
So if you want to run 182 Cup wheels and keep the centre caps on with the PMS studs you'll need to have spacers of least 10mm.

I have the PMS stud kit. Very pleased with it. Not had any problems since fitting. I swap between 182 cup wheels for road and oz f1s for track. You won't be able to get the centre caps on with the 182 wheels. Unless you have spacers, which I haven't got round to sourcing yet.
