Shortened Number plates

Basically my dad is getting his new car in 3 weeks, and as he has a private reg I suggested he got a shorter plate made up as it would suit the back end of the car nicely.

He doesn't think that it would be legal but last time I looked into it you just had to have a certain margin between the letters and the edge of the plate.

So can someone please clear this up for me! the reg is only 5 digits long.

There is no legal plate size, just legal sized characters, spacing and font

As far as I'm aware - as above, an 11mm border all round and the small text along the bottom (plate manufacturers name, postcode and BS No.)

The rules govern when the number plate is made, e.g. (After 1st September 2001)...
