Rescuing my 182

Hi :D my names Dean and I though't id start a project thread on my little old Clio , to be honest I've started this a little late as I've already done a lot of bits and bobs but can still walk through !

I acquired the car after saying ill never own another Renault Clio sport ( my 172 made it 40 miles from the dealer before giving up bottom end )

I went to Telford car auctions with some friends from work to get some cars for the works lot! id seen on the list a ST 170 with 40 k in imperial blue so that was my target , until I saw a Silver 182 in the lot feeling sorry for its self

It had been traded in at a large Car dealer (Arnold Clark) and it didn't half look like it needed some love , it had full service history and 94 k but that is all I knew !

I said we will see which ones come in first the ST or the Clio and ill decide on bidding !

Well true to form the 182 came into the lot and I pop up , bidding started at £1000, and I put a cheeky offer in ! It rose quickly to £1500 and after that one stubborn dealer away I managed to bag it at £1600 :D happy days and cheap for a 182 IMO

I went fetch the paper work and see if i won the bid to which after much umming and arrring they agreed :D
I went to fetch my new keys and car :D

And straight away the battery was flat :( haha i love Renaults ! The drive how was some what .... interesting , with no numberplates on the car (was on private reg ) trade plates in hand i hit the road for 40 miles in the heavy rain and learnt my clio needed some more work than I first thought !

I was all over the roads on the way home i didnt dare give it any as it was going round corners then just steering off :(

I got it back the workshop for some proper photos still happy at the price !

Heres some photos from when i got here back !! ill add on from here in comments as to keep it down a little

The next few plans were to find out exactly what was causing it to drive like a boat on the way home !

I jacked it up and did a bloody good check over , I realised then this did need a bit more love than I first thought , but I wasn't one to be put off !!

I traced the Dodgy steering down to a O/S front ball joint , it was hanging off , this was causing my unpredictable steering .

While up I also noticed the 4 tyres were close on the limit , the battery was dead, the exhaust back box was cream crackered , the rear discs and pads were worn heavily shall I say , and a few other bits and bobs !

So cracking on I ordered a OS ball joint £6 (euro car parts) and some plates already seen and a battery £50
I dropped the car off for 4 tyres and a courtesy track check ! and she was ready for a little drive , and I must say straight away the car was a dream to drive after just a little bit of work , it handled like a completely different car, maybe because I didn't dare in the rain to push on 4 worn tyres and a feckered ball joint , but now it was making me smile :D

Ill post some more when I have 5 minutes to get to where I am to date

Looks like a very tidy little motor for the money.

Thank you :D ill get some more up to where im at now , just need time to write it out and get the pics on :D i was happy at the price id just sold my VW golf for £1700 and i bought that for £500 and did a load of wiring repairs which cost very little so made alot towards this Clio at this point it only really owes me around £600 !!

Soo to carry on ! Taxed an ran the Clio for a few weeks and absolutely loved it :D

I decided it was time to sort the rear brakes and a few bits and bobs as MOT time was fast approaching and i knew it needed sorting!!!

The car then had new Rear discs, new rear standard pads , a Full brake fluid change strip clean and grease front brake pads ( like new but i like to be 100% on stuff like this )

Then came the dreaded exhaust ! I knew this needed doing as id seen it but I thought about keeping it standard ! I went over to Renault and even with Staff discount it was still £290 odd plus the dreaded! :(
So i decided ill start on the hunt for a new better one to fill the gaps , after much research and price comparing i settled on the k-tec/janspeed Full stainless with an un-silenteced centre section as i dont mind a little noise :D

This was one of the defining mods for me ! and really made me love the car !! i just wanted to drive it everywhere !! before it was okay now it felt and sounded like a proper car !!

Add to get closer to where i am now , I bought some new sidelamp bulbs and a numberplate bulb to brighten up the place a little !!

  Clio
Very nice .

To bad I'm never buying another clio otherwise I'd like a project like this!

Ive just had way to many over the years.
and the one I have at the mo needs brakes clutch an a snapped wheel nut in the hub.

And on to the last few weeks shenanigans !!

The car was taken to Birchdown autos for a Full cam belt dephaser and aux belt change ! And a oil and filter too , im a mechanic and got the bits myself but decided let someone whos done 10 million do it as this would be my first sport belt and i needed it done right !!

Cant recommend these boys more to anybody they lent me a courtesy car and did the job all in perfect time !! The price was damn good as well !!

I bought some aero wiper blades as the old ones were due renew ! It passed its MOT with 1 advice on a chip in the screen which has been repaired :D over the moon with it !!

64C27E37-0162-4FEB-8345-75E57789BB6C-6291-0000029EAC753240.jpg

Decided i fancy a little bit of induction noise as the exhaust was very raspy and popping !! I didnt want to go for any old max power crap though , i wanted it to serve a purpose so after research again , ended up between a k-tec kit and a V6 box with a performance filter !

But due to christmas and the disappointment most had with k-tec i decided to go with the tried and tested v6 with k&n

Also found a chance to chuck in my cliosport stickers and tax disc holders !!

Productive days as the Skoda fabia spiltter went on too !! not 100% happy with the fit but it will do for the forseable till i get it perfect !!

And i also managed to get chance to sort the headlamp washers !! they didnt work when i bought the car so got two new washer jets ! fitted these and tried ... nothing ... so remove the bumper and traced the lines to where some genuine willy had blocked them off and cut the pipes ! i cant understand why as the jest are about £14 genuine from Renault!!

So fitted the pipes together and found out why they had been blocked off !! tried the washers they work :D so i wnet the toilet came back to the ramp, and my car did a wee all over the floor!!!

Turns out they were leaking back to the join !! I blocked them up and left them for a few days , and ordered some 1 way valves of ebay, these are VW 1 way valves they were approx £3 each and fitted them into the lines ! they work a treat if anybody needs the link PM or ask ill send it over ! i fitted these in the wheel arch , some do it as close to the jets as possible but they work fine there !!

118D4362-5F5A-4A83-8BA8-AEA7F49A7BE5-6291-0000029EC88E0979.jpg

And thats up to date !! ill keep this going and as i do more !! next few plans are sort the wheels , have the front end painted again and get some proper carbon badges not just crappy vinyl covers lol
then maybe a RS tuner !

Also shes been treated to a full 4 wheel laser alignment !! everything came back good, few very little tweeks here and there but you ask anybody how much better a properly set up car handles ! i'm no rally king by any means but you can feel the difference ! and even better it was free from a mate who owed me one for fixing his breakdown :D

Aup Dean, Good to meet you mate. Thought you said you didnt drive fast anymore?? Sounded ace as you left Trentham ;) Let me know how the brakes are once you fit them. Was about a week away from putting them on mine before it went. Should be a fair bit better than the standard setup mind

Definitely looking a lot better than it was! Really coming along, good work.

Thanks very much :D

Great transformation :) car's a credit to you!

Well today i decided its time to furkle again !! been collecting some bits for a while but needed get off my fat lazy bottom !!

First off i started with the simple basic ones , fitted my new floor mats , and the new alli foot rest id recently purchased simple two second ones but forgot take pics :( ill get some soon looks loads better !

I also got it in work and decided its about time i fitted the new discs and pads id fetched aswell , brembo high carbon pads and discs on the front !!

I knew the old pads were mint so id out this off the discs were a little worn but once i got the car up today i realised how bad the were :/ good job id gotten new !!

old discs on the car , the outer edges looked mint and the pads did too , about 10%-20% worn , but the inner edges had another story

NSF disc

Loads happier if nothing else its peace of mind !!

They are still in the bedding process , they are good though , stopping feels a bit better the the pedals firmer !!

I also set about fitting my new inlet manifold !! What a ball ache :/

The old one came off no problem, and while it was off i took the opportunity to torque the spark plugs, mainly beacuse when i fitted then i wasnt a wear of the tendency to throw them out , so inlet off i torqued them up, all good and close apart from number 2 cylider which nipped up a bit before clicking out , so happy with that !!!

Banged the new manifold on and instantly ran into the first problem as its slightly different , its missing one of the back pin holes to bolt it down !! :S i though it can live ,
New one went on a winner , started it up and went oh dear revving to 2k , i knew straight away it was leaking (my own fault didnt get a new gasket )

so got some gasket sealer and took manifold off and resealed gasket , looked mint but hey ho, back on, started revving to 2k but had a light on the dash now , as you imagine lots of language came out and i stormed back to the front to find no leaks :S

Decided it must be something down to the new inlet , so ripped it off and bolted the old one back on started still revving at 2k

Was very annoyed but knocked it off and went borrow a Snap on - Solus case it was down to the light being on due to vaccum leak !
After reading the codes i will be man enough to admit i drop a ball !! lol
I forgot to plug the throttle body in the second time after the vac leak and because it was idling at 2k i completely forgot about it

My fault and man enough to admit it !! , so plugged in started up mint !! now time was running out at work so i left the old manifold on for now and im going to get a new gasket and fit it WITH THE THROTTLE BODY PLUGGED IN lol

But also while messing about i had the time to check see if i had the lower RS inlet fitted or not , seams to be a vague one on this as nobody said if they were standard on 182, some said yes some said no some said they were only on 172 cup and some said it was only on a cup full stop :S

Well i popped under have a look and saw the magical letters

22D83E79-F254-4843-8108-BBFED9D773A3-20368-000009F86649D034_zps553195c2.jpg

Not that it makes much difference , if any for that matter but its nice to know , and i can confirm mine is a 182 standard , not a full fat or cup !
And i can pretty much guess its not been fitted by the prev owners as its only had 3, me being the third and the first one had it a couple of years the second till i owned it and he was a tight b*****d judging by the state i got it in ! lol

Hopefully more pics to follow soon !! and a photo on the engine bay built up and running
