Renault 5 GT Turbo, F7P Turbo Powered Tungsten Track Car.

  Mk1 Focus RS
Have been on here for a couple of months now, So I thought I might get my project copied over as there seems to be some quite knowledgeable people over here the should be able to help me out along the way. ;)

Started on. 17/03/2011 but trying to shorten it down a bit. If people could hold out replying until I have it all copied over

Bought this back in July 2010 with the Idea off just using It for the shell. It had a full re spray a couple of years back and both sills replaced recently, So was a good base to start on.

Then I was away in Canada for a month so nothing happened to it for a while.

While I was in Canada I decided I was going to sell my other Black Renault 5 GT Turbo and focus more on this one.

So 6 months later I finally sold it last week.

With it's new owner.

I hadn't really touched the grey since I bought it and it just sat on my drive looking like this for months.

DSC03119.jpg

My plans where to fit a 180-200bhp Renault 5 GT Turbo engine that I had and turn into a reliable track car. That then went out of the window when I was offered a complete F7P Turbo converted Renault 5 GT Turbo. It had only done about 1200 miles since the re build and had receipts adding up too thousands, so I bought it ! :)

One on the way back from picking it up, notice the extra ramps I had to put on under the car as it was so low to getting on the truck.

So that's it so far, I've missed loads of bit's out like the 4 hours I spent scraping sound deading off one night, other panels, side skirts but all of those pictures are on my camera, as you can see these one are just the s**t ones of my iPhone.

I have got so many plans for the car In the future, but I'm holding back on alot as I really want it ready for the RTOC track day at Mallory Park in June

Sorry about the poor grammer and s**t spelling, but It's late and I've had enough :p, will do my best to keep this updated. enjoy :) Lewis

DSC03528-1.jpg

I bought some OE replica dails as it's really common for the faces to fade, especially after 20 years as you can see. Also a new clear plastic front as mine had a crack in it.

DSC03538.jpg

Today though I had my new clay bar and wheel wax turn up. So spent some of the afternoon claying my front bumper. Got a bit carried away and wanted to clay more stuff, so moved onto my wheel's, I only got one done as I've now have a blister on my thumb.

Few more updates and pictures of my phone, was working like crazy all over the weekend until 1am most nights. There is so much work to be done and everything seems to take twice and long as planned. Still good fun though. :)

Bought a filler neck of a Renault 5 Campus to replace the second fuel tank found on the GT Turbo.

45ee97bf.jpg

I borrowed a welder to patch up a few bits, Lovely gas less MIG. Not ! hardest thing I have ever used. That's why it looks like this :p

f6cfca1a.jpg

Carried on though and done a patch in the engine bay after using Kurust on it.

Spent most off friday night In the garage cleaning of the glue left from the head lining,

DSC03601.jpg

Cut away some of the bottom of the front bumper to try and save some weight from it as its solid,

DSC03591.jpg

DSC03592.jpg

DSC03595.jpg

And then spent the afternoon wet n' drying the front end down ready for painting.

DSC03602.jpg

DSC03604.jpg

DSC03606.jpg

DSC03607.jpg

Just can't wait to start building it up now.

  Mk1 Focus RS
Got the most of the front end in paint now. It was going to go to the body shop to have the inside and engine bay painted gloss black, but time is tight before Mallory Park so I decieded to do it myself. I was given 6 can's of Ford matt black for free so thought why not, It was only meant to be a quick job to protect it from surface rust, but you can't seem to ever do a quick job on this car.

DSC03619.jpg

DSC03614.jpg

The yellow stuff is filler primer, then hi build primer on top.

DSC03610.jpg

1200 grit wet n' dry

DSC03608.jpg

DSC03609.jpg

Cleaned down the surface with some panel wipe

DSC03615.jpg

Matt blacking, the bits little bit you see are seam sealer that flicked up as I took the pictures later in the day.

DSC03623.jpg

DSC03622.jpg

DSC03626.jpg

As I'm running bonnet pins on the carbon bonnet I cut away the catch.

DSC03627.jpg

DSC03629.jpg

Removing more seam sealer.

DSC03625.jpg

Wire wheel disc after about 6 hours use :p

DSC03630.jpg

Mates turned up so got them to sanding and scraping on evan more seam sealer.

DSC03636.jpg

I got bored at this point, So I put my 15" OZ wheels and my mates Clio 182, Coilovers want winding down now though.

DSC03634.jpg

  Mk1 Focus RS
Had 6 cans of 3M under seal turn up today, The 6 should do the whole of the underside of the car and inner wings.

DSC03641.jpg

  Mk1 Focus RS
Painted most of the front end now and trail fitted the front wing.

DSC03647.jpg

DSC03646.jpg

Then gave the bonnet a clay, polish and cleaned the catches.

Started on the rear end at the weekend as the front is done for now.

Had some pleasant surprises when I took the rear bumper and arches off though :crap:

DSC03663.jpg

DSC03664.jpg

Wasn't happy at the weekend and really wanted to through the towel in with the whole project, it's just turning into such a big job ! Wished I had just bought a newer car something like clio 182.

  Mk1 Focus RS
So after my little sulk, I started up the other car with the F7P Turbo engine still in, that put a massive smile back on my face so I'm back on track. :)

Next day I got the car back out and winched up the front end ready to do the underside.

DSC03671.jpg

And that's how it still stands. :)

  Mk1 Focus RS
Not really done a lot over the last couple of days, as I felt I've been working on the car every day and night since I started on it. So went out clubbing friday night and turned up to the RTOC meet down Southend seafront by mistake last night :p

I did get my willwood disc's painted though, as they have been sitting around the attracted some surface rust, and rusty disc's do look **** !

71c219f1.jpg

9b9b8830.jpg

Rubbed them down lightly with the angle grinder wire wheel, then gave them a light coat of very high temp paint (the pads will just wear off the paint on the face)

  Mk1 Focus RS
That's it so far, again there is still so much to be done but looking back at the first pictures I realize how much I have already done.

Sorry about the massive amount of pictures, and hope you don't mind me bringing my non Clio over here to CS

Will do my best to keep this updated, enjoy :sleepy:

Thanks for all the comments, Yeah they are all nearly 20 years old now ! so all have rust in some places.

Stared the job today I have been putting off for the last week, wire wheeling the underside of the car ready for underseal !

I had to go and buy a new grinder first as I killed the last one.

Holding the grinder in the air for any length of time kills your arms, so kept stopping and done some other jobs

Stripped down the rear beam

Cleaned up the rear disc's ready for painting like the front ones, They look s**t and eat through pad with the grooves In, but I might as well get some use from them before getting new ones.

Also took the bottom of the boot lid off as I wanted to change the badges over to an original one I had on my other car, the cars are different shades so I can't just clip the other strip back in.

It does have some laquar peal but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, as I don't really want to paint it.

I made a right mess taking the old badge of as it was all bonded on. It's going to be to visible with the new smaller badge fitted, so I't really needs re-painting. The problem Is, the paint is a non OE paint and a mix of a few different colors so will be really hard to match. I think I'm just going to do it gloss black for now or get it carbon wraped to kinda match the dark black bonnet. :/

I completely agree on this being that I've worked on this and it's one thing after another lol but its gonna be a beast when it's done ;) although still want one though haha!

Fair play that's a big project you've got on your hands. Stick it out don't cut corners rid if of metalworm and the end result will no doubt make up for all the hours of graft.

Thanks,

Slowly getting there with cleaning the underside down, Done about half of it now.

Right, not done a lot over last month really, as I figured I was never going to make Mallory Park in June and I didn't want it to be a "that al do" project, to get it finished.

On the plus side, after weeks of research, phone calls and haggling I got a myself a new welder.
If you know about welding you will know how good Lincoln Electric welders are! I went for the 191c model with the new Al bee gas.

Also bought some campus rear window seals, as a mate Is looking into getting templates made up for 4mm Lexan poly carb windows. Plastics for performance want silly money for there window kit, so im just going to make my own.

Will get some pictures up tomorrow.

  Mk1 Focus RS
To start with I've done away with my Photobucket account and gone over to Flickr, as it so slow and always sticks my photo's in different albums. I'm hoping I doesn't mess my pictures around much from the thread though.

Done some work on the boot lid at the weekend, mainly weight saving and just cleaning it up.

Firstly removed the glass as I'm going to use perspex windows and the glass had a big scratch on it.

A lot easier than I thought.

I had all ready taken out the wiper motor and arm then worked out what I was going to cut off.

Forgot to get a finished picture.

Also bought a couple of meters of CDS as I'm going to ad a few bars onto my roll cage.

So Lewis, what's happening with the 5? any more updates

Done a few bit's over the past week, but as you may have guessed I was away at Mallory on saturday and horse show sunday, so not got anything done all weekend one the Renault.

Pretty much finished seam welding the spare sum frame, Welding looks s**t but I just been practicing with the new welder.

Just need to get it powder coated now when I send the VW Beetle floor pan off.

Decided I'm going to paint the inside of the boot matt black like I'm doing the rest of the inside so it doesn't look to out of place.

So started some of the prep work.

Selling up,

Just lost interest and patience with the project, needs a lot more money and time spent on the car and realistically isn't going to be finished for another year yet. Can't wait that long so I'm looking at getting a myself Clio 197 for the time being, maybe come back to 5's in a few years time.

All parts will be going up for sale, If you see anything in this thread you like PM me.

^^^ He's selling up mate, shame as i love Renault 5 restoration projects.

  Mk1 Focus RS
Right......

What seems to be months without working out on the car has only been weeks but I have to say I've missed it! After quite a few debates and a lot of thinking I'm going to carry on the Renault project! I've spent all this weekend away with Cliosport.net and as much as I would like a nice new modern reliable car, the Clio 197 is just too boring for me!

Bit gutted that I did sell a few parts, but they all can be easily replaced. Glad I never let the engine go but then the advert was pretty bad.

Spent this evening putting a spare interior loom in and got the engine turning over. I'm going to do things a bit different to what I originally planned, so watch this space.

Lewis.
