Random window washing!

My 182 seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to the window washers - trying to spray the windscreen either works OK, doesn't work at all or the rear window. Totally unpredictable. The rear screenwash does work correctly and all the time. Struggling to know whether the problem is the switch/stalk or the relay. As I understand it front to rear is just done by switching the polarity on the washer motor so it runs forwards or backwards.
Has anyone ideas on most likely source of problem and which/where is the relay.

Pump has been replaced recently and does work so I think must be the electrical feed to it. Some one else posted a similar problem but in reverse ( based on the rear window switch) but never got an answer. Could be an earth problem but still do not see how that would reverse polarity.
