Paying to use Wi-Fi on iPhone 3G

Is this correct, I thought using wi-fi was free as you not connecting up to their (o2's) network. Are they having me on?

Networks at your house, your mates or at work are free.

The pay ones are in McDonalds, Airports, Starbucks etc.

Thats what i said to the guy. Basically i want the simplicity o2 tariff for £20, u get one free bolt-on which I choose free internet using the 3G connection, but this doesnt include wi-fi, so he said I would be charged.

no think its a bolt-on, so I choose it anyway as an option, then they are saying if I wish to use wi-fi it will cost. Cant be right thought I'll ask you guys first before shouting.

Well then just don't use those wifi networks in public places.

They separate them to confuse people and get more money. Wifi & data.

Simples.

Wi-fi is not a service as such, your phone either has the ability to pick up wi-fi or not. No bolt on will change this.

See it as a wireless modem in your phone and if it can pick up a signal... its free!

yeah I understand that but what he was saying was if I use my wi-fi at your house (if I ever come) I will be charged for this by o2!

Man at phones4u said it was some sort of marketing scam when I asked why wifi was on a prce plan I was looking at

how can they get away with this

Get away with what?

The Wifi bolt on grants you the use of any bt openzone or cloud hotspot for free. Thats all it does, nothing else. Free wifi is still free.

What don't you understand?

He's gave you the standard Simplicity 20 tariff, the free bolt-on only applies to that. With the iPhone Simplicity tariff you get visual voicemail, wifi (BT or the Cloud) and data included as standard. Only the cancellations department could offer the iPhone specific version when I last phoned them.

when they say it won't be free they are telling the truth as they are talking about the cloud and bt openzone which are free to contract customers.

your one at home will obviously be free, but you can get it where you can also use the public ones for free which is what you get with the contract phone.

Mate, your not only on the failboat, your the bloody captain!

Cloud, btopenzone etc, both wifi network services, both not free UNLESS YOU HAVE THE WIFI BOLT ON IF YOUR NOT ON AN IPHONE CONTRACT.

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

to the op, simplified version of this thread:

Salesman in shop has no idea what wifi is or how it works.
You have no idea what wifi is or how it works.
JJ appears to think he does but actually doesn't/has got confused.
The remainder of people know what they are talking about but the thread has gone round the houses to give you the information you require, so i'll stick it all in 1 post:

If you get a phone, on the simplicity tariff with the web bolt on, you will get unlimited (subject to fair usage policy) time to spend on the internet on your phone under edge/GPRS/3G internet connection.

If you get a simplicity tariff with the web bolt on, the wifi connection in your house, your friends house, your dads nans house, all free, even your next door neighbours will be free if they've not got a password on it.

Wifi networks in public places which come under the "cloud" or "btopenzone" ownership (it will tell you this when you try to connect normally) will charge you if you connect to them because you don't have the bolt on that gives you free access.

So in summary, unless your going to be sat in mcdonalds filling yourself with fat whilst browsing pornhub then you should be fine, i have never used a wireless network outside someones house as i don't need to, 3G etc is fast enough for what i need when i'm out of the house, for most peoples lifestyles it should be perfectly fine.

I'm assuming people on contracts are fine? I've never given it any thought to be honest, have used Wifi in numerous places before (Wetherspoons, McDonalds etc) and have never been prompted, it just connects.
