Oil leak.....Gear box?

  Clio 172
I have an oil leak which appears to be coming from the gear box, its not a major leak just a minor one. If it is the gear box does anybody know if i would need a new one or any ideas of how much it will cost to put right?

Thanks

There always leaking slightly from the selector shaft, its almost normal. Any leaks from the driveshaft seals or from the casing will need doing.

I've got a gearbox oil leak aswell. It's definately coming out of the selector shaft and only appears to be minor, i think?

I've only had my 172 for 5 months and I took it for its first service/MOT recently. My local garage mentioned I had a 'serious' leak from the selector shaft and that it needed fixing by a gearbox specialist, probably at a cost of £500+ . They however said that the gearbox oil level only needed slightly topping up, which they did. They also offered to have a look at the oil level 2 months later free of charge to see at what rate it is leaking. To my suprise, they said it need 2 litres of oil at a charge of £16+VAT, that's 2 litres lost over just 2 months! In comparison 2 months earlier at the service it needed only a 'top up' after over 1 year of leaking! I think they've diddled me. I curious to hear what people think. Everyone talks about minor selector shaft leaks which you need not worry about. No one has mentioned a major selector shaft leak, especially 2 litres over 2 months! I certainly don't want to spend £500 quid on gear box repair!

Correction..... it's the first service/MOT I've taken the car for, not the car's first ever service/MOT lol.

Bumping an old thread, got my car back after a service today and they've said that there's a small leak around the selector shaft, and that they all do it.

They've said that Renault do a seal kit that kind of goes over the area (2 seals to go around it then a cap on the end), also said it might make the gear change a tiny bit stiffer as it takes up more room (I've no idea what all these bits look like so apologies if I'm talking about it all wrong!).

I really wouldn't worry about it.

They all do it. Just make sure you check your box oil everytime you check the engine oil..

Sounds interesting. Probably cost a arm and a leg to buy

The garage said about £70 I think for parts and labour as well.

It's going in for some tyres soon and I'll ask, or pm ClarkieV6 on here (Alex from Carlton Garage) as that's where I take it.
