New to 172 ownership

  172 cup
Hello I'm pete, used to have two 1.8 16v clio's then bought a 306 gti for abit now I have bought a 172 cup cheap off e-bay. Previous owner said recent cam belt and dephaser pulley. Drove it home for about 30 miles nice and steady then about 5 miles from home thought I'd give it some on bypass. Next minute big engine failure smoke and oi everywhere. What a welcome back to Renault!! Now bought another 172 sport to strip engine out and swap over all other bits being sold to fund the cost of engine.

Finally started to strip engine out today!! Got as far as taking drive shafts out and it became to dark. Only thing is struggling to open mount for ecu, is there a special way to do this? Looks as though car has been in a front end shunt as bumper and slam panel bent light on drivers side cracked and air con rad bent in buy don't need any of that so not that bothered!!!

Went round and put the last bits back together tonight, only gear linkage and bumper bolts to do. Went to start it and nothing, just a loud click. On closer inspection we found the problem was a loose connection on starter motor. So it's alive!! Started first turn of key as well. Need to get stereo out and get the code off here for it and fit a new exhaust mount on rear to stop the sagging exhaust and then see about MOT hopefully pass and then enjoy it for a bit!!!

Sent it for mot today. And to my surprise it passed:) advisory on all the disc's being pitted but going to sort them over the next few weeks. Just insured it £360 fully comp bit surprised at price as it was £55 dearer than my 306 gti6 was, are cups dearer to insure because no abs? Going to tax it at weekend and then enjoy it for a bit, had a close call on way to mot when a van driver thought he owned the road and decided to block my way, slammed on and skidded back end started to come round before stopping. The joys of no abs. Waiting for turinis to turn up (eBay bargain) just need to find two more for it and then will be all good
