New Car Audio

  none :(
Hey, i have a 1.2 clio grande 1998 (S) and need to get new speakers (as the previous owner ripped them all out :( ) but i am completely new to all this and basically don't have a clue.
All i want is a sub, amp and the speakers which produces decent sound.

I have a sub and amp in mind: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...3921_crumb_31265-31371_parentcategoryrn_33921
Does anyone know if that is any good?

But i do not know about the speakers, i know i need parcel shelf ones (6X9?) and the front door ones, but don't know the size of them and not sure if there are any others and i cant find it in the handbook :( (any help would be great :) )

Also when i look at speakers it says max wattage ###watts for example: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...rumb_31265-31371-31396_parentcategoryrn_38231
but the sub and amps max watts is higher than the speakers, does that mean the speakers will blow?

Thanks in advance, please don't be rude :( , remember i have to start somewhere and i have no one else to ask.

Thank you:approve:

Also i made it different colours so it isn't quite so boring to read ;)

Don't take it the wrong way or anything but FORGET HALFRAUDS!
Surely, use their wall display to compare some different makes of speakers.

Your front & rear speakers are 13cm / 5.25"
Don't go for 6x9s - another Halfrauds "in your face" mod :dead:

Have you upgraded your Head Unit?
if so, then start with a set of components in the front, then add an amp & sub with a decent wiring kit :)

Overall really depends on your budget & how far you want to go with your ICE

Yeah don't do to halfrauds, or just go there see what you fancy & buy it elsewhere as halfrauds are a rip off.

  Clio MK2 (1.2)
DONT Get fusionnn their propa s**t m8. if u want good subs for cheap, get the 1000w Fli 1's in halfords, they give some awesome bass but get a powerfull amp tho.

ok thanks for the sizes :) , head unit will be upgraded next month, but my budget for speakers, amp and sub is around £200, i dont want to go too far with it and need some boot space left :)

if you dont mind me asking, why do people not like halfords? and what other places in cambridgeshire can i get speakers?
and lastly are you saying that 13cm ones go in my parcel shelf as well and do i only have 4 places for speakers? thanks :)

Yeah if it was me I'd avoid the cheaper brands
Vibe
Fusion
Fli
Kenwood
JVC
Sony (not cheap as-such but VERY over rated & a minefield of problems)

More popular and "quality for money brands" would be
Alpine
Pioneer
Diamond
Focal
MTX

  Clio MK2 (1.2)
sony ar good Tigger and so ar kenwood, i had a good setup with kenwood until i pushed it 1 day and the subs went POP since then i just go for more expensive / better value entertainment :)

na m8, u need 6x9 to go on the parcel shelf, Infinty 1's are preety good, nice vocals from them if u got subs,

13cm 1's go for the fron and possibly if u have in the back

Halfrauds (as we like to call them) are total rip off merchants, in general their staff know naff all about the products they sell.

Tbh, your probs best looking in your local Yellow Pages etc for a car audio shops then see what they recommend.

- don't get 6*9's - speakers sound better when they are round, as they are supposed to be.

errm ok

I've had (at some point) listened to almost all brands of speaker when choosing my setup for competing.

Yes, Sony make good TV's and Kenwood make a decent blender, I won't argue with that

fatrix_1 - Halfords don't actualy have any specific training. it's a try & hope for the best sort of idea with them :dapprove: plus they are expensive!

Do not get 6x9's!!! Please!
Get yourself a good head unit to power all your door speakers. Then buy a sub, box, sufficient amp and a good wiring kit. Sorted.

I'd stronly advise you not to get 6*9's. I had 6*9's in my old car, and the difference between that and running a decent set of components and a sub is immense.

If I were you, I'd try and build it up over a couple of months, and not try and stretch a tight budget to get them in one go.

Speak to someone at a SPECIALIST shop and see what they have to say, and check all the forums and stuff.

Personally i would avoid Halfords unless you know exactly what you want and that Halfords are doing it on offer.

I don't know much at all about car audio, other than the difference between listening to the set up I have now, compared to what I did have is huge.

At the moment i have a pretty good setup, on not too bad a budget :)

Got an Alpine CDA-9855R Head unit - Paid £130 off eBay..
Alpine Type S Sub - 800w 10" with box for £42 Delivered... a Friend
Alpine Amp - MRV-F303 - £55 Delivered - eBay
Alpine 13cm Components & Coaxials in Front n Rear Powering off the Amp... £50 from Motor-world.co.uk

Sounds Pretty good, had no problems with anything...

:)

problem with ditching the 6x9's is at the minute i have 2 6x9 holes in my parcel shelf:( and empty they look kinda horrible.

So for a list:
1 set of 13cm door speakers (2 speakers altogether)
1 Sub
1 Amp
1 Decent wiring kit

Is that correct?

not sure what you meant by 'box' if you could explain it that would be great thanks :)

and there is a place near me called carnoisseur (something like that) does anyone know anything about these? cheers :D

  Coiley'd Clio PH2
Correct. That is what you want.

Although my list would be as follows:
1 Aftermarket Head Unit
1 set of 13cm component speakers for the front doors (Powered by the head unit)
1 set of 13cm coaxial speakers for the rear (Powered by the head unit)
1 Subwoofer and a pre-fabricated or home-made box for the sub to be placed in.
1 Amp that has the same power rating as the the subwoofer (Doesnt matter if it is slightly less powerful, just not more powerful as you may end up blowing the sub)
and finally 1 wiring kit.

Sorted!

As for the two holes in your parcel shelf..... get down to your local stealers and buy yourself one from there. Got myself one from there for a tenner.

You can get a parcel shelf for not much money, put an Ad in the wanted section.

I would personally get components (I think that is the ones with the tweeter?) which will give you the best possible sound IMO,and wouldn't bother with anything in the back of the car, and would run everything from the Amp. Not really sure how it works, but you need a minimum number of channels, 2 of which will be used for the Sub and 2 for the front speakers.

Just my 2p worth. That may be wrong, I am not very up on audio.

would this be an ok set up with decent sound...

This Sub: http://www.motor-world.co.uk/show_prod.php?prod_id=13367 £84.99

In This Box: http://www.motor-world.co.uk/show_prod.php?prod_id=8416 £29.99

This Amp: http://www.motor-world.co.uk/show_prod.php?prod_id=13077 £119.99

These 13cm Speakers: http://www.motor-world.co.uk/show_prod.php?prod_id=13075 £22.99

And this wiring kit: http://www.motor-world.co.uk/show_prod.php?prod_id=10533 £19.99

All this comes to around £280
So i would have to buy it in parts, e.g amp and speakers one month and them the rest another.

Would these be easy for me to fit? or should i take it somewhere? if anyone has a guide of how to do it that would be good thanks

p.s thanks Josh i will check it out

dont buy a sub and buy a nice headunit, very nice set of front components and some full ranges for the back

  Renault Clio 1.2 16V
something you have all overlooked...

before you spend anything on a loud stereo all the tea leafs in your neigbourhood will hear a mile off, GET A GOOD ALARM.
I thought id be fine and although they lasted 10 months my door was bent back and 350quids worth of subwoofers/amp/box were stolen last week!

only if you intend on having your radio up loud round where you live, turn it down a few roads before you get to your house,no one will know

  Looking for a Mk1 Clio?
Yeah if it was me I'd avoid the cheaper brands
Vibe
Kenwood
.
To be fair Vibe aint cheap or s**t.... They have some very high quality stuff, including there SEK 60 and 50 series.

Very good if not some of the best stuff i rate

  Monaro VXR
What head unit have you got first of all? Does it have a preout for the subwoofer?

Upgrade front components and sod the rears for now. Not really needed as such. But get some proper components with seperate tweeter, woofer and a crossover. Also look for a cheap bargain amp. Doesnt need to be massively powerful. Can look for this stuff on ebay might get a bit more for your cash.

And a small 10" sub will probably do you fine with a decentish amp.

Will cost you a little more than you planned but will sound much much nicer.

And dont be worried about buying amps that are more powerful than your speakers / sub. If anything thats a good thing as long as there not massively more powerful. It just means you can have the gain turned down so its like running the amp and getting the full amount out of the speaker but only pushing the amp to 70% of its abilities better for your amps and speakers.

Yes their top-end stuff is more expensive, and might appear to be "awesome stuff" but that doesn't make their build quality & reputation stand out like other popular brands.

There's more money put into how their equipment looks rather than the SQ - it is a "look at mine" brand along with so many others. It's by chance that some of their stuff sounds good.

In all fairness people hear things differently and have various preferences, also crap equipment can sound half-decent if installed properly.
You could have a £10 set of speakers "sound better" than a £1000 set if they aren't mounted correctly. It's how they perform and last that makes all the difference, hence the price gaps.

Amp is way over priced and you dont need to go that powerful..

The human ears can only tolerate 280w before going Deff...

Get a 250w amp like the alpine MRV-T222 like i have now purchased, sounds awesome and really good value for money, never excedded the volume either...
