The objective:
Deliver 217 breeding pigs to Segovi, Spain from East Yorkshire.

Vehicle:
Scania Topline R620 towing custom spec Pezzaoli trailer.

Monday 14.00.

Fully loaded unit out side of our base in East Yorkshire. 42 tonnes total weight. We were loaded up with food and drink and some clothes. We forgot forks and anything to cook in though lol.

A breeding pig for those who live sheltered lives...

Monday 18.30

First stop in the south after 4.5 hours due to the driving time directive...

DSC_0005.jpg

Wrong animal right idea lol

DSC_0006.jpg

Manday 21.00

Arrive at Poole Port. One of the few places that will allow us to take Livestock on their ferries. Still they managed to make a hash of this by loading us inside the ferry. Even after telling them we needed to be on the outside deck for ventilation..

Waiting in the 'dangerous load' section.

The ferry.

DSC_0012.jpg

Tuesday 06.00 - Temp 17degrees

The ferry docks after waiting for 3 hours for the lazy frogs to open their port. Straight off the ferry onto a dual lane road. The only good thing about france is the road system.....

DSC_0013.jpg

Tueseday 12.00 - Temp 26 degrees

Time to stop for lunch and to water/feed the pigs. We were in a serivice station just below Nantes. We got to see a 20 car police escort of 2 truck full of nuclear weapons turn up too which was odd lol.

Watering time (trailer custom fitted with drinkers and 1000 liter water tanks)...

DSC_0014.jpg

DSC_0015.jpg

Trailer roof raised for more ventilation.

DSC_0019.jpg

Monday 18.00 - Temp 29 degrees

A quick blast through the vinyards...

DSC_0023.jpg

Then its time to stop for the night. Driven for 10 hours and covered 874km's. Average speed of 87kmh which is damn good in a truck limited to 89kmh...

One problem we were now batteling was the heat. Keeping 217 pigs alive was hard work. We had to resort to hosing them down during stops to cool them off.

Wednesday 04.00 Temp 16 degrees

An early start to get through the spainish borded with as little trouble as possible, since getting stopped generally means a serious fine for any small offence....

Northern spain's mountains..

DSC_0024.jpg

Wednesday 10.00 Temp 36 degrees

Heat now becoming a huge problem. The pigs are able to drain the 1000litre tanks in 2 hours. Taking on water becomes a priority.

Some nice buildings though.

DSC_0029.jpg

Wednesday 12.00 Temp 43 degrees

A very tired me planning our route home while waiting for the vet to come to lead us to the drop points.

DSC_0031.jpg

Wednesday 13.00 Temp 45 degrees

Our first of 4 drops. Heat was horrific. Pigs needed to be constantly monitored.

DSC_0033.jpg

Wednesday 14.00 Temp 45 degrees

On route to our other drops there was some nice scenery

DSC_0036.jpg

The villages were not designed for trucks as large as ours... Progress was slow.

Cool statue

DSC_0039.jpg

Wednesday 1700 Temp 50+

Our last drop. This is the temp reading of the truck in the shade.....

DSC_0041.jpg

At this point we were very happy to have all the pigs unloaded. A lot less stress for us trying to keep them alive!

Wednesday 1900 Temp 41 degrees.

Time for a wash and dissinfect at the local wash centre..

All clean

DSC_0055.jpg

Even inside the cab lol

DSC_0057.jpg

We stayed there for the night and set off the next morning after our rest time expried.

Thursday 04.00 Temp 12degrees

Time to power through spain and get as much of france out of the way as possible. Sadly i made a major f**k up and ended up going into the centre of San Sebastian. Getting out of the city required lots of reversing and pissing spaniards off.... City centres aren't big enough for artics lol

Some nice mountains though lol

DSC_0059.jpg

The high temps had killed the front tyres on the trailer so we had to raise them in case we were stopped by the police. If they are raised we can say they aren't in use.

Thursday 14.00 temp 34.

Time to stop for our last night in france. We are just North of Nantes thus leaving an easy run to the ferry or around 7 hours. We are exhausted..
Bottle of wine and sit in the sun.
Eat microwaved lasagne lol

Friday 05.00. Temp 10

Head off to the ferry taking in as much coffee as possible....

Friday 1800 Temp 32.

Board ferry for the 3 hour crossing. Have a well earned shower! Eat and sleep a little.

Friday 22.00 Temp 17.

Land in Poole. Have to spend the night at the port to meet our alloted rest time.

Saturday 03.00 Temp 10.

Time to power home with a quick stop for a piss and a coffee.

DSC_0070.jpg

Saturday 10.00 Temp 15.

Finally back in base. Exhausted.

waggons are awesome!! would love to do a trip like that driving one of thoes things, maybe not with the stress of looking after pigs

Id love to drive/deliver something to some random place in europe..the best chance I have is our office in France or one of the broadband/electronic shows we go to in Germany/Belgium...but I never get picked to drive..bloody office based design crap sucks! :(

Found that quite interesting! thanks!

Is that journey that profitable? £1600 on fuel, wear and tear (especially tyres!) and 2 wages? Madness.

Yes and no.

On a good run with no damage to tyres etc we make about £1k from it. Once you add tyres and other little problems into it, it soon gets eaten away.

I'm going to Italy with one next month.

Furthest we've been is southern Africa.

f**k driving through Africa! Bad enough when I was driving in Gambia let alone driving through loads of other countries!

What an unusual thread for a hot hatch forum, good read though! I would have been totally stressed out trying to keep those pigs alive as well, 45degrees in that trailer can't have been fun.

9MPG though...no wonder people want to get haulage off the roads and onto trains.

I never thought I'd find a thread about transporting pigs such an interesting read. Nice post. :D

Should have posted in Road Driving Stories, would have made a refreshing change to the "I pwnt a 1000BHP skyline through the twisties lolz ZOMGWTFBBQ" threads fella :)

Good read, all the pigs survived the heat I take it?

Very good read, bit of an insight into the world of road haulage.
Is it normal for 2 people to go on a trip like that? what with tending to the load etc.

  LY R26
gd read, we stayed in san sebastien last year can only imagine what it was like for you getting about with the truck!

  Golf R
good read that, always good to see something different...

weirdly enough just driving into work this morning i noticed a similar style lorry and trailer parked up in a layby, took a double look and it was a Chris Waite wagon lol

Some loads are just sent with one person. TBH it isn't nice for the driver though. 5 days on your own sends most drivers a bit mad. Especially with the stress of looking after the aminals.

Is it your family company? good read, lots of things people wouldn't generally consider.

Scottish plates and a kilted emblem I see too ;)
