My 172 Cup at Snetterton

As I'm relatively new here, I thought I'd post some pictures of my 172 Cup. I didn't actually have any up until the weekend, but a friend of mine took a few whilst on a track day at Snetterton last Sunday. Some of you might well recognise the registration number, as the previous owner was a member. Can't remember his name mind.

The car is fairly standard. When I bought it, it had Eibach springs, a Ktec exhaust, an induction kit and a rather low front splitter from an Astra, which I promptly broke off on a ramp. I've since swapped back to a standard exhaust and changed the original induction kit for one by "The Fatty", which is a bit neater than the one that was on there. I've also fitted new tyres, track rod ends, injectors and a few other random fixy bits. The car is by no means a minter, it's had a bit of paintwork down one side, the front bumper is a bit damaged, and the wheels are heavily corroded, but I didn't really pay a lot for it, so I can't complain. The car is only a daily/track hack whilst I rebuild my Escort rally car, so buying a mint condition car didn't really make much sense.

Anyway, onto the pictures:

The car was very impressive to be honest, it certainly held its own, especially considering it's just on Continental Sport Contacts. A set of track tyres would have seen it easily matching some of the proper track/race cars. It had the legs on the 750MC MR2s on the straights, so some sticky rubber probably would have seen it match them through the twisties too. Can't really justify going down that road to be honest though, so will continue to enjoy it for what it is. The only essential upgrade is some better brake fluid, as I managed to boil the standard stuff!

The only other plans are to refurb the standard wheels, as they're in an awful state, and perhaps buy an original front splitter for it.

Just for a laugh, I went along with two friends, one in an Alfa 147 2.0, and the other in a Vectra V6 Special, which is basically something that was built specially for the Police, so it looks like a boggo SRI, but has the 2.8 Turbo V6 and brakes from a VXR. Shame it's knackered, but it still went fairly well really.

Enjoy.

Thanks chaps. I bought the car to use it so it doesn't get too much sympathy. Like you say, that's what it was made for. I might have felt a little guilty if it was a minter but, as it's a bit rough around the edges, I'm happy to abuse it.

I am curious to see what it would be like on track tyres, as I'm sure it would be a weapon. It's a slippery slope though. It would start with tyres and finish up with cages and coilovers. The Sport Contacts are pretty good so will just have some fun as-is. Will have the Escort for playing in properly :)

I'm actually from near Gt Yarmouth, but I do work in Thetford so you may well have seen it around.

I work on Fison Way so the other side of town really.

Ha thanks, the username has been with me for several years now so can't really get rid of it!

Yes very possibly, but hopefully I'll be in the Escort by then :)

I'm just up the road at Multimatic.

Sorry to revive an old thread but good to see no-name is finally getting the track time she deserves. My wife was one of the previous owners, and banderson should recognise it, he did the shocks on it when we lived in Thetford. Sounds like the guy we sold it to did some work, we sold it completely standard in April last year.

Hope you have a lot of fun it it, she's a cracking little car, even if she does crave attention and money sometimes!

Thanks Ian.

I bought it in around October last year from the chap in Ipswich. Funny that you lived in Thetford - I work there at the moment!
I'll reply to your pm when I'm on my laptop too.
