Limp mode really bad :(

  Fiesta ST + Clio 182
hi everyone,

recently my 2002 non sport 1.2 16v dynamique started going into limp mode at traffic lights every now and again. it was idling rough so i changed the spark plugs to the recommeneded ngk ones. seemed alright after that, idle was better, not as rough but occasssionally i still got the famous limp mode. I then changed the coil pack and that made no difference whatsoever (a friend recommended it was worth changing it just in case).

just recently though every time i stop at lights or whatever, limp mode kicks in until i rev the car over 3000 revs and then it goes off. sometimes the car will completely cut out. does anyone know what may be causing this? i dont know much about cars in all fairness haha

also, when i rev the car theres a slight hiss, like something isnt firing(maybe?).

love the car but my heads battered. if ive missed anything please let me know, its my first post as well

cheers!

Check your breather pipe (It goes from behind the driver headlight (well below it) to the top of the engine where the accelerator cable goes make sure its fully in tact and no holes or that its fell off its mounting point onto the cam pulley and rubbed it through like mine did

Hey cheers nick I'll have a look at that tomorrow mate and let you know.

I wasnt sure about putting it on a code tbh after reading some post on here about getting the same fault, then fixing that and having no results if u get me. But I might have to. Cheers jack.

What exactly do you mean when you say its going in to "Limp Mode"? A poor idle condition is one thing and easy enough to fix normally but If the ECM was restricting you and running the car in a safe mode it wouldn't let you rev it past 3k rpm but you say it does and then the light goes off if I'm reading this right. The Clio II 1.2 16v is full of nasty little gremlins, mostly electrical, but there are some issues that are caused by pure lack of servicing... the throttle body being one!

Due to its location mainly it rarely gets cleaned and this is your idle control also as its a stepper controlled TBU. The ECM is almost always swimming in a pool of breather oil in the rear of the resonator box which needs to be cleaned up so either take it to a specialist that knows these cars and knows how to service it properly or get the spanners out and do it yourself; won't take you any more than 40 minutes and cost you a can of brake cleaner and some rags.

The electronic coil light comes on on the dash and the car will rev itself up 2000 revs but I can still rev the car. When I do rev it the light goes off and the car goes back to normal. It seems like it's every time I stop it will either cut out or do this. Yesterday when driving home I put the clutch down and let the car roll doing about 30, it then cut out. Do you know anyone in the Newcastle area that could help Mick?
Is the ecu cover a common problem with thes bmh? Could it be worn cable?
Thanks everyone. I do apologise for my useless posts haha

ECM security tab is a HUGE problem on these vehicles as it rubs thru the PVC sheath and acts as a short bridge... causes all kinds of havock. Check this first and then repair any damage. If the damage is too severe then the "short" loom needs replacing; last time I checked it was around £140 from Renault.

Now, the coil light you describe and the rev's going to 2k say's to me you've got a fault in either the throttle body (common on this car) or with the pedal setup (maybe even the wiring between the two).

I can think of someone that deals in this kind of thing yes and he'll even come to you to sort it. Check out www.diamondmotors.co.uk and speak to Mick... he's ginger but don't hold it against him cos he's actually an alright bloke. Just don't mention the black eye he got yesterday changing a gear selector for a customer cos he didn't see the funny side of it ;)

Cars has been hooked up to the laptop and came bak with 4 fault codes. Bloke has cleared them all and told me that a good clean of the throttle body and probably the map sensor will stop these faults reoccurring. I'll post the codes later if anyone interested. Cheers

Sorted! Took the throttle body and inlet manifold off giving them a good clean then put back together. Car drives like a dream now :D thanks for everyone suggestions!
