Got a dyno run in half hour.... exciting

  2003 Cup 172
Got my first dyno run on my 172 cup booked in for 11:15 for the first time since i've bought the car. Really looking forward to seeing what it's putting out. Only performance mods I've done to it at the moment are the KTR Sports Cat, Supersprint Stealth cat-back, and ITG panel filter. Should be interesting.

i'd be happy enough with just the standard 170-ish output, anything else is a billy-bonus. I would've done a run before I put the exhaust on, but there wasn't much point as there was a universal replacement system on it that was massively restrictive, so it wouldn't have been a true comparison between stock exhaust and the performance one.

Time will tell.....

It's going on the rollers in Storm Developments in Aldermaston (they're a VAG specialist and do awesome things with superchargers for VAG engines) - used to come to them with my old TT and S5.

Well, here we go....

Graphs are at the wheels, max power is shown on the table at the flywheel and written on in the graph (as they ran out of colour toner, and the power is in yellow so it didn't show up in the printout)

The lumpiness I was told was more to do with the rollers and the tyres (as the tyres are very very new and they were slipping a little, which is where that huge blip comes from). He said there's no way the engine was running that lumpy as it didn't feel like that when he was in it. They reckon the drop off after around 5500 rpm is probably spark plugs, so i'll get them changed asap.

So 188 at the flywheel, and 165 at the wheels. Torque was 173 at the flywheel and 152 at the wheels.

Interesting figures. I know people will say that this is high, but I'm really just using it as a base to work from, so I have a start point to measure changes.

Technically if the power was up at standard and with the exhaust and the sports cat in place, in theory this could actually be correct.

I've got a little vid but it's uploading at the moment and taking a while.....

Any thoughts?

better not be cam timing - had all the belts replaced at K-tec less than 200 miles ago!

Will be getting spark plugs straight away though.....

Graphs all say Audi s3 ?!

If you're really going to replace the sparks, there's only one kind you can run. Quick search will tell you what they are.. NGK PRE 1 or something like that..

I dont think its the engine, I just think those rollers are rubbish.

Assuming that it does have a problem that means its making peak power at 5500rpm, that peak power would not be more than about 160bhp.

Torque of 173? Thats more than most throttle bodies engines with cams make!

As Chippidychip said, the rollers look awful. Curves should be smooth. Also, if the machine thinks it's an Audi, the calculation steps for the final drive ratio might be WAAAAY off.

I also don't like guestimates at wheel back to fly power. There's no way of knowing the losses through the box. Three runs with 3 different types of tyre on the car will give you 3 different results.

At the hub is the only way to roll, IMO ;)

What were your reasons for going on the rollers? Presumably to see if you have a healthy engine, but you say the guy admits the graph is not representitive.

I can't see how that run was of any help to you, have you asked the guy for some kind of refund?

If you want a base to work from take a trip to Surrey Rolling Road.

I'd ignore the results you've got if the car feels fine.

I only wanted to have a quick see if my car power was about right or not. It feels perfectly fine to drive, but as it's my first clio i've no idea if it feels down on power or not as I have nothing to compare it to. I'm not overly fussed about these results as i'll be getting a remap at some stage in the not too distant future anyway, I just wanted to see if there was anything obviously wrong at the moment (and maybe way under-powered), which other than potentially the spark plugs, there isn't.

I would've gone to one of the usual specialists for a run but there aren't any nearby, and I value my free time too much to waste a few hours of my saturday travelling there and back just for a quick look-see at what the engine is doing out of pure curiosity (plus I was in a hurry today anyway). When I get the remap done and have any specialist work done then i'll make the journey (as I did recently when I went to K-tec), but this place was 10 mins from my house, so I'm not complaining. :)

Power loss at 4500 from 102 to 101 then up to 117. Normal?

Well no, but it's not necessarily power loss, there were some tyre slippage issues as the tyres are so new, the first run showed 90bhp cause they were slipping like crazy - i need to bed them in more. I'm not looking at every individual blip on the curve as I know there are discrepancies and I know the car doesn't drive like that, so i'm just looking at the average trend, which shows it going up. The only thing that I AM looking at is the drop off after 5500rpm - that's definitely not that normal.

The whole thing is not normal mate, I would get it on some proper rollers before you draw any conclusions.

Dyno lottery mate every place is different I went to ktec and 2 powerstation the same day and got different results dyno lottery

I'm pleased you posted this, it seems the two main reasons for rolling roads are to measure an improved tune or confirm an expected cars health. The person doing this run could not help you with either aim.

You now have doubts about the health of your engine and want to spend money but I think you need more reliable info really

I don't have doubts about the engine at all, it runs just fine (and the guys at k-tec agree when they drove it), all that dyno suggested was maybe a spark plug issue causing that dip after 5.5k (although it could be anything, or simply a balls up on the rollers). I'll just check them and if they're fine then I'll leave them and just hold fire until I go for a remap, where it'll be put on a more reliable rolling road with renault specialists.

Ultimately it was a quick last minute test cause I had some time spare, with someone local to me, that didn't quite run well due to a number of factors, that hasn't really revealed a huge amount about the engine. I know the jumps and losses on the graph are from the rollers as the car feels fine and pulls well and is very smooth, so I'm not worried in the slightest, I simply don't really know much more about my power output than I did this morning due to the strange output from the dyno.

Eventually I'll book it in somewhere else and see what it does there, which should hopefully be more accurate.
